Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun has sympathized with the family of the late member of the House of Representatives representing Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, popularly known as “Ijaya.
Onanuga, who until her passing served as the Deputy Chief Whip in the Green Chamber, reportedly died on Wednesday after a brief illness.
In a condolence message late Wednesday night, Governor Abiodun described the passing of the late lawmaker as devastating and shocking, noting that her death is a monumental loss to Ogun State in particular and Nigeria as a whole.
The governor eulogized the deceased as a fearless leader, a loyal party member, and a great mobilizer who contributed immensely to the advancement of women and the general well-being of her constituents until her final days.
He prayed for the repose of her soul and for strength for the family she left behind to bear the irreplaceable loss.
Abiodun said, “I sincerely sympathize with the leadership of the House of Representatives, led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen and the entire members of the lower chamber on the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga.
“Without mincing words, her death came as a rude shock to all of us in Ogun State. It was both devastating and sudden; we have truly lost an extraordinary amazon.
“Her courage was exemplary, and her loyalty was exceptional. We will sorely miss her. However, we take solace in her immense contributions to humanity and the good of all.
“May God Almighty rest her soul and grant her family the strength to endure this great loss.”

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has established Police Anti-Money Laundering Units across the country in a strategic move to combat terrorism financing and strengthen national security,
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP, Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement said the initiative aimed to combat financial crimes and prevent illicit financial activities that could undermine the country’s stability.
The PRO disclosed that the new units will be led by renowned financial expert, CP Hyacinth Azuka Edozie, and officers of the rank of Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) in all State Criminal Investigation Departments (SCIDs).
He noted that the initiative is a strategic move to strengthen the Police’s role in national security, specifically in combating financial crimes and also critical in countering the sophisticated methods used by terrorist organizations as well as other criminal entities to finance their activities.
Adejobi also observed that the establishment underscores the Force’s commitment to safeguarding national security by preventing and detecting illicit financial activities that could undermine the country’s stability.
“It also enhances the operational capacity of law enforcement agencies, especially the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) in furtherance of its global oversight functions, to address various security threats”.
“As a testament to the zeal to curb financial crimes and boost national security, the Police recently made significant arrests in Kano and Nasarawa States. On December 8, 2024, at Gwale, Kano, operatives, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended Nura Ibrahim and discovered counterfeit currency, which included the sum of N129,542,823,000 in counterfeit currencies”
“A breakdown comprised of 3,366,000 in Counterfeit US Dollars, 51,970 in Counterfeit CFA franc, and 1,443,000 in counterfeit Naira. The arrest led to further arrests of accomplices Muhammed Muntari and Usman Abdullahi,” he said.
Similarly, Adejobi revealed that on January 13, 2025, the Force arrested 53-year-old Ephraim Barde in New Karu, Nasarawa State, with counterfeit U.S. dollar notes totalling $160,000.
“Following the arrest, further investigations are underway to determine the full scope of Barde’s involvement and identify any accomplices.
“The IGP calls on all citizens to play an active role in national security by reporting suspicious activities related to counterfeit currency and financial crimes,” the statement added.

Nigerian born Canadian, Emem Madu, has been appointed as a Judge of the Alberta Court of Justice in Canada.
Madu is an alumna of the University of Lagos Nigeria.
According to a statement in that regard, her appointment is to the Edmonton Family and Youth Division and takes effect Jan. 31, 2025.
A Nigerian man, Professor Gideon Christian, shared a post on Thursday announcing her appointment.
“A great @UnilagNigeria alumna just got appointed as a Judge of the Alberta Court of Justice. Congrats, Madam Justice Emem Madu. #Naija no dey carry las,” he wrote.
According to the circular signed by Chinenye Anokwuru, Senior Press Secretary, Justice, and sighted by DAILY POST, Madu received a bachelor of laws from the University of Lagos, Nigeria in 2002, and a barrister at law from the Nigerian Law School in 2003.
She also obtained a master of laws from the University of Alberta in 2007.
Madu has also worked as a regulatory compliance specialist at ATB Financial, a policy and legislation analyst at Alberta Justice and a research lawyer at Brownlee LLP in Edmonton.

The Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has blasted Nigerians, saying the sufferings in the country are the result of the bad choices made during the 2023 elections.
DAILY POST reports that Apostle Suleman was in Bauchi State for a two-day “Recovery Conference 2025”.
Before the mega crusade, he visited the Government House in Bauchi, where he met with the Executive Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed.
Accompanied by his entourage, including senior pastors like Dr. Kingsley Aigbe, Apostle Suleman commended the Governor for his leadership and hospitality, describing him as a man of honour.
He assured the Governor of his continued prayers for the leadership and people of Bauchi State.
However, when asked by journalists during an interview session at the Government House to express his view on the situation in the country, Suleman berated Nigerians for their voting choices.
“What Nigerians are going through is partly what they deserve. Before the election, we cried out, we screamed, we yelled.
“The man (President Bola Tinubu) who came into leadership had no manifesto— just a sense of entitlement with his ‘it’s my turn’ mantra,” he declared.
He lamented the state of the nation under Tinubu’s administration, pointing to policies and the devastating mismanagement of the oil sector.
“The oil sector has been plundered. In the next 10 to 15 years, I don’t think Nigerians will recover from the damage. Now, all we can do is pray,” he stated.
He also called for Nigerians to reflect on their choices ahead of the 2027 elections, warning, “If they’ve suffered enough by then, perhaps they’ll make better decisions.”
Also speaking, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, warned that the policies being implemented by President Bola Tinubu, if not checked, were capable of destroying the fortunes of the country.
The governor explained that he did not have any personal grudge against President Tinubu in view of his constant criticisms of the policies of the Federal Government.
“Tinubu’s policies don’t have a clear vision and are taking us to the road to perdition and destruction.
“That is why when I talk about the tax reforms it is not because I don’t want reform but I want reform that will have national impact. I don’t have anything against the president but respect,” he said.
Mohammed maintained that he would not be tired of pointing out the shortcomings of President Tinubu as long as Nigerians continue to be short-changed by his policies and programmes.

The Nigerian Senate has stated that the proposed multilateral and bilateral N40 billion deduction as contained in the 2025 budget document of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation will clearly leave activities of the Ministry unfulfilled in the provision of water to deserving Nigerians.
This position was highlighted by the Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation, when the Minister of Water Resources, Prof. Joseph Utsev and the ministry management appeared before it for the 2025 budget defence on Wednesday in Abuja.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kenneth Chukwuemeka Eze, expressing deep concern, wondered how a critical government ministry charged with the responsibility of water provision to Nigerians will be left with inadequate funds and other challenges in 2025 only to concentrate on loan repayment, insisting that it was not the best way to.
“What happened to the projections for 2025 when loan repayments have consumed a significant portion of the budget?” He queried.
The Committee Chairman and other members of the Committee lamented the devastating effect of erosion across the country, describing the menace as economic and social catastrophes that should be addressed through the budgetary provision in 2025.
Earlier in his presentation of the previous year’s budget performance, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, elaborated on the ministry’s challenges.
He stated that the allocation for loan repayments deducted at source had left the ministry with only N57.7 billion for its activities.
He said: “In the 2025 budget proposal, priority is given to completing ongoing dam and irrigation projects to enhance agricultural productivity and food security.”
The minister outlined plans for collaboration with the private sector under Public-Private Partnership, PPP, arrangements for dam and hydropower projects, as well as partnerships with international organizations to scale up interventions in sustainable water management and sanitation.
He added, “The Ministry believes that with adequate monetary allocations, we can complete viable projects that contribute to job creation, poverty reduction, and overall economic growth.
“However, the ministry faces a limited expenditure ceiling for capital projects and insufficient overhead allocation to cover day-to-day operations.”

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal has restated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of the families of brave officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Governor participated in the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration on Wednesday at the trade fair complex in Gusau, the State capital.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that Governor Dauda Lawal donated N20 million to the Zamfara State Chapter of the Nigeria Legion while launching the 2025 remembrance emblem a day before the celebration.
The statement added that the Governor inspected a guard of honor mounted by the Armed Forces and members of the Nigerian Legion.
“Governor Lawal also led the wreath laying and ordered a one-minute silence in honor of the fallen heroes,” he said.
Governor Lawal emphasized that Remembrance Day is a tribute to fallen heroes and a call to action for all the people of Zamfara State and the entire country.
“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is celebrated nationwide on the 15th day of January every year to commemorate and salute the selfless souls of our veterans who fought gallantly to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, who laid down their lives in sacrifice, so that we may live in peace.
“We appreciate and value their commitment and sacrifice, which have made a difference in our lives today.
“With gratitude and a sense of duty, we pledge to continue to remember them and support the loved ones they left behind.
“This day is a tribute to our fallen heroes and a call to action for all people of Zamfara State and the entire country.
“It is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by those brave individuals and to reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values and principles they fought and died for.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s livestock reform initiative aimed at boosting food production across Nigeria.
The reforms, championed by the recently established Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, were highlighted during an advocacy visit to Adeleke’s office in Osogbo, the state capital.
The governor reaffirmed in a statement by Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, that his administration’s readiness to align with the initiative.
During the meeting with the committee, led by Prof Attahiru Jega on Wednesday, Adeleke detailed ongoing efforts by the Osun State Government to position the state as a major contributor to Nigeria’s food security.
The governor outlined measures being implemented to enhance agricultural productivity in Osun, underscoring the importance of integrating the federal livestock reforms into the state’s broader agricultural agenda.
He described the advocacy visit as a platform to strengthen collaboration between the state and federal authorities, with a shared vision of transforming the agricultural sector and ensuring food abundance.
Adeleke in the statement said, “My administration is irrevocably committed to any initiative by the Federal Government that will put more food on the tables of the people of Nigeria.
“While I welcome your team to my dear Osun, the State of the Living Spring, it will interest you to hear that my administration is not leaving any stone unturned to buy this idea.
“One of the efforts of my administration in this regard, among others, was the recent procurement of 31 tractors given to the farmers in the state, aimed at boosting food sufficiency.
“In addition to this, seedlings and other incentives are being given to farmers at will by my administration using a well-structured implementation drive being organized ceaselessly by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in my state.
“To this end, I want to earnestly declare my interest in this FG’s initiative to boost food production, and very soon, I will put in place a strong committee of egg heads in the field of Agriculture to design a good template for Osun on the best way to reform the livestock sector.”
Earlier, the Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Initiative Reforms Committee and former Chairman of INEC, Jega, said his team was in Osun State to sell the idea of the Committee and its overall objectives, which, if bought into, would go a long way in making Osun benefit maximally.
“I appeal to Governor Adeleke to set up a Ministry of Livestock in Osun State or any agency in that regard that will see to the realisation of the dream of the FG to make livestock available in large quantities throughout Nigeria,” he advised.

The Nigerian Air Force, the component of Operation Fasan Yamma has admitted that the operation carried out by the Air component of Operation Fansan Yamma had affected the Tungar Kara community in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
This was revealed during an on-the-spot assessment carried out by the Fact-Finding Team.
The leader of the Fact-Finding Team, Air Vice Marshall Edward Gabkwet, who led other members of the team to the affected community, Tungar Kara, explained that they had noted the point of impact of the bullet on the wall and ground within the community.
Gabkwet said this underscored the sincerity, transparency, and accountability of purpose, which the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar had exhibited, and that he had been troubled since he got news of the unfortunate incident.
“At least 16 community members were reportedly killed in a Military Air raid in Tungar Kara, after a pilot mistook local self-defence forces for criminal gangs”, he said.
“Residents had mobilised from several neighbouring villages to confront gunmen who had attacked Dangebe village in Zurmi district, carting away livestock and burning homes.
“Reports say the group was returning to their villages after chasing away the bandits who attacked Dangebe when the fighter jet bombed them on reaching Tungar Kara village,” he said.
Air Vice Marshall Gabkwet also mentioned that there was the need to take responsibility for such an unfortunate incident and show empathy to the affected people in line with the international humanitarian law, as well as to build trust with the people.
He told newsmen during an interview in the affected community that the Nigerian Air Force would conduct a forensic analysis of the evidence to come up with useful information that would help the Chief of Air Staff make informed decisions about the unfortunate incident.
