Abia Harmonized Task Force destroys illegal shops in Umuahia, Aba, impounds vehicles
Abia State Harmonized Taskforce, ASHTF, has carried out a major crackdown on street trading and unapproved structures in Aba and Umuahia.
Also, illegal motor parks were sealed, while trucks obstructing the flow of traffic were impounded or towed away by a crack team of the Abia State task force.
DAILY monitored the exercise in Umuahia on Tuesday, as the traders selling goods at unapproved places along Isi Gate by Umuwaya road, Abriba street, Ohafia street and Warri street by Umuwaya road were chased away.
Some tables and wooden culverts constructed by the traders were confiscated by the Task Force team and crushed on the spot, while some others were taken away on a truck.
However, the traders’ goods were not destroyed.
Also, the raid tagged “Operation Restore Absolute Sanity” was carried out in several spots in Aba like Osisioma Junction, Tonimas, Enyimba, Double Pole, Ariaria Junction, and Park Road, among others.
Traders and motorists who had encroached on public spaces and blocked drains were compelled to vacate those areas.
The operation in Aba was led by the Chairman of the Harmonized Task Force, Uzor Nwachukwu, who is also Abia State Commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs and the General Manager of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA.
Justifying the actions of his members, the Chairman of the Abia State Harmonized Task Force, Uzor Nwachukwu said the traders, motorists and illegal motor parks operators were repeatedly notified to vacate the places voluntarily.

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, says his government was ready to respond to all scenarios if U.S. President, Donald Trump, imposes tariffs on Canada.
Trudeau made this statement on Tuesday.
When asked about an uncertain timeline on possible tariffs, Trudeau said Trump is a skilled negotiator who likes to keep his negotiating partners a bit off-balance.
DAILY POST gathered that Trump is expected to sign more executive orders on his second day in office.
Recall that on Monday he suggested across-the-board tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports to the United States could take effect beginning in February.
“Donald Trump’s approach does bring in uncertainty. As regards next formal interactions, stay tuned,” he said.
According to him, Trump’s promised prosperity for America will require Canadian resources to fuel it.
“Canada provides many of the necessary inputs the American economy is going to need in order to grow and boom,” he added.

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has suspended the budget defence of the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, OAGF, over alleged infractions and lack of preparedness.
The OAGF risks zero allocation for 2025 because the deadline for budget defence for Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, is Wednesday after which standing committees of the red chamber will present their reports to the appropriations committee.
At a session on Tuesday, members of the committee said the Auditor-General, Shaakaa Chira, failed to provide satisfactory answers about the 2024 budget performance of his office.
“The auditor-general is expected to audit other agencies, but his own office is not meeting the standard. He has until the deadline to return prepared,” Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Ahmed Wadada said.
Also, a member of the committee, Osita Isunazo, said the inability of Chira to provide detailed information about the 2024 budget performance makes it difficult to proceed.
“The discrepancies in the documents and the inability to provide detailed explanations for 2024 spending make it impossible to proceed,” he said.
Speaking, the Senator representing Delta central, Efe Dafinone said the OAGF made some irregular spending.
“It is concerning to see 65/70 percent of the budget was spent in the final months, which suggests rushed, last-minute spending,” he said.
Some of the senators on the panel also raised concerns over duplications in the documents presented by Chira.
Thereafter, the committee suspended the session and asked him to return on Wednesday with proper documents.
