A governorship aspirant of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Mr John Nwosu, has said that the new Anambra Homeland Security Law is susceptible to abuse by private security operatives.
In a press statement made available to journalists on Sunday, Nwosu described the law as largely good but criticized the delay in its enactment and the reluctance of the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to acknowledge that protecting and securing lives and property in Anambra is the primary responsibility of the government.
He said: “The Soludo administration continues to exhibit its cluelessness in matters of governance. We hope that the implementation of this law will not overreach, thus further compounding a deeply troubling security situation in the state.
“As belated as the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025 is, it is salutary and points in the right direction, but only if faithfully implemented and certain oblique provisions of the law are not abused.
“The greater danger lies in the functions that may be arrogated to private security companies and relevant government agencies to enhance security operations, even with the guardrail checks provided.”
Nwosu further noted: “It boggles the mind, however, that in passing the law, the ANSG (Anambra State Government) did not acknowledge and accept its primary constitutional ‘responsibility to protect’ Anambra State citizens and residents. Such an oversight is telling and unfurls the prevailing didactic leadership mindset.”
He argued that a fundamental flaw in the law is that the state government appears to abdicate its responsibility, instead shifting it to local government leaders, community leaders, and traditional rulers.
“The implicit and explicit lack of reference or acknowledgment of government’s functions in this regard, coupled with the fact that most tasks under the law devolve on local governments, traditional rulers, municipalities, communities, and private security companies, is rather troubling. Talk of passing the buck!
“The prevailing crisis of wanton brutality and dehumanization being meted out by private companies acting as agents of the ANSG in the tax collection and waste management sectors should have informed the need for better clarity in defining the role of armed private security companies.
“In governance, language matters. There is a vast difference between the state ‘recognizing the critical need’ and ‘acknowledging its constitutional role’ or acting ‘in keeping with its constitutional responsibility,’” he said.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, has confirmed that 86 persons have lost their lives in the tragic tanker explosion incident that occurred at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area.
The Director-General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah, stated that the corpses of the deceased were recovered and buried.
He explained that 80 of the deceased were laid to rest in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Health Care (PHC) premises.
According to him, five bodies were claimed by relatives and taken away for burial in the town, while one person died at the Dikko PHC.
The DG disclosed that the mass burial was conducted by NSEMA in collaboration with the Gurara Local Government Area and a team of brave and kind-hearted volunteers. The burial took place between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m.
“The number of the injured now stands at 55, with one person unfortunately succumbing to their injuries at the Dikko PHC,” he revealed.

This warning aligns with the intensified offensive by Nigerian troops against Turji and his network in Zamfara State. According to Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism and insurgency expert specializing in the Lake Chad Basin, recent coordinated military strikes have dismantled key hideouts of the bandit leader. These operations have focused on areas like Fakai in Shinkafi Local Government Area and Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
Makama highlighted that military forces have successfully destroyed several of Turji’s camps, including those in Zangon Dan Gwandi, Zangon Tsaika, Zangon Kagara, and a school reportedly used by Turji as a storage facility for foodstuffs and weapons. To prevent it from being used as a supply base, the military burned down the school during the offensive.
The renewed military efforts signify a major push to end the reign of terror orchestrated by Turji and his network in the region.

Niger state Governor, Umaru Bago has directed heavy-duty trucks to cease using the one-way route through Dikko Bridge following a catastrophic tanker explosion on Saturday that left over 70 people dead.
The explosion, which occurred at Dikko Junction in Suleja Local Government Area, claimed the lives of individuals attempting to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker.
During a visit to the scene of the incident, Governor Bago expressed profound grief over the loss of lives, describing the event as tragic but noting that nearby communities were not affected.
He condemned the reckless behavior of some drivers and announced immediate measures to prevent future occurrences.
To enforce this directive, vehicles coming from the Maje direction will no longer be allowed to pass through Dikko Bridge. Instead, they must take the alternate route beneath the bridge and make a U-turn. The governor has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) sector commander to deploy a detachment to the area to ensure compliance and urged transport unions to collaborate with the FRSC in implementing this new traffic regulation.
Governor Bago attributed the frequent accidents in the area to delays in completing the Minna-Suleja road project and appealed to the federal government to expedite the project.
He also commended the swift response of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, FRSC, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers in evacuating victims and managing the aftermath of the explosion.
As part of the state’s efforts to support the injured, the governor announced the redeployment of doctors from Minna hospitals to assist in treating victims currently receiving care at Suleja General Hospital.

IGP warns against traffic negligence after Niger tanker explosion
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has warned against traffic negligence following the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, claimed over 60 lives, left many injured, and destroyed shops and properties.
This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
According to the statement, the explosion was triggered when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire.
Describing the incident as devastating, the IGP expressed his condolences to the government and people of Niger State.
In response to the incident, the IGP directed all State Commissioners of Police to strengthen their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with other traffic management agencies.
He emphasized the need for strict enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.
“Negligence and disregard for traffic laws are major contributors to such incidents.
“I am instructing all Commissioners of Police to work closely with traffic agencies to ensure that our roads are safer and traffic laws are strictly enforced.”
The IGP also called on vehicle owners and drivers to prioritize safety by ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy and adhering to traffic regulations.
“Road safety is a collective responsibility. Every driver, vehicle owner, and stakeholder must play their part to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and property,” he added.
In his message, Egbetokun urged transport operators and members of the public to act responsibly to ensure road safety.
He also prayed for the souls of the departed and wished the injured a swift recovery.
