The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has advised students of Government Girls’ Secondary School, GGSS, Dutse, Abuja, to resist any form of peer pressure to abuse drugs.

The Director-General of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the advice while inaugurating NAFDAC’s Consumer Safety Club, NCSC, at the school.

The club aims to engage and educate young people, spreading the message to desist from drug abuse among youths.

Represented by Dr Paul Kamai, Deputy Director in charge of Narcotics in the FCT, Adeyeye said that students must remain focused to achieve their dreams and maintain a good reputation in society.

She urged the students to take only prescribed medication, concentrate on their studies, and develop their talents.

“Alcohol is the most widely used drug by adolescents, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or race.

“Alcoholism is a chronic illness with an insidious onset, which may occur at any age, and adolescent drinking behaviour has been a vital social issue in several countries.

“Alcohol is very common in our community, where it is freely sold in sachets and small-volume bottles.

“These are very dangerous for adolescents like you, and you must learn to resist the urge to engage in alcohol consumption,” the Director-General said.

According to Adeyeye, NCSC is one of the agency’s special public enlightenment strategies targeting young people in its efforts to eradicate fake and substandard regulated products and promote a culture of quality.

Ogun Assembly promises to resolve grey areas in pension law

The Ogun State House of Assembly, through the House Committee on Establishments and Public Service Matters, chaired by Babatunde Tella, has assured the Joint Action Committee of Pensioners in state-owned tertiary institutions that the Assembly will explore ways to amend the State Pension Law of 2013 to address areas of concern.

Tella made the promise on Friday while addressing members of the Joint Action Committee of Pensioners in State-Owned Tertiary Institutions, assuring them that the assembly would collaborate with the state government on how best to address issues related to pension payments for the affected pensioners.

He stated that the assembly would look into amending the state pension law of 2013 to resolve all grey areas, explaining that retired professors and other staff of tertiary institutions should not be made to suffer before receiving their entitlements.

The lawmaker sought the cooperation of the Bureau of Pensions and other relevant stakeholders in addressing the concerns of pensioners.

He said: “Our job is to create an enabling environment for other arms of government to thrive. We must do everything possible to encourage those who are still serving.

“The issue of Japa Syndrome is affecting our education sector, and the Assembly will revisit the pension law of 2013. There is a need to amend the law.”

On his part, the Assembly Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, noted that all stakeholders, including the state Commissioner for Education and representatives from the Ministry of Justice, would be invited to address the issue.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of State Pensions, Mrs Arinola Adetayo, explained that the rationale behind the issue of retirement benefits was following the relevant sections of the State Pensions Act, assuring that all concerns raised would be addressed accordingly.

Earlier in his presentation, the chairman of the forum, Prof. Adeniyi Ogundipe, expressed displeasure over the unprocessed pensions of some members since their retirement from service.

He appealed to the state government to intervene and assist in addressing the concerns of retired staff from tertiary institutions in the state.

In another development, the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, encouraged youths to be diligent in whatever skills they acquire to be self-sufficient and good ambassadors of their families.

Elemide made this statement while addressing pupils of Lyceum College, who were on an excursion to the Ogun State House of Assembly to learn about the operations of the legislative arm of government in the state.

For a long time, speculation surrounded their departures.

Many claimed they left due to restrictions on ministering outside Christ Embassy.

For instance, as Sinach’s international music ministry grew, her presence at Christ Embassy became scarce, which allegedly displeased Oyakhilome.

It is believed that Oyakhilome asked her to return and actively participate in the church’s singing ministry.

In a recent video circulating online, the pastor said: “Why did it happen? The church was turned into a party place, not a place of prayer where God’s word was truly celebrated. They were not soul winners; they led praise in church, and when it was time for prayers, they were gone.”

The cleric further lamented that worship in the church had changed, becoming more about personal celebrations than true worship. He criticised the musicians for commercialising their talents, charging fees for their performances, and allowing secular influences to infiltrate the church’s music.

“I did at the beginning and celebrated them, but when I changed, they refused to change with me, so I had to let them go.

“God was getting my attention, telling me this was not the way. I told them the Lord wanted us to do the right thing.

“They had become too popular, and because they were making even little money… do they know what big money is? The little money they were making was too attractive to them, so they didn’t want to follow me. So they made a detour. I hope they all repent. They are not worship leaders,” he stated.
