United States President, Donald Trump on Sunday said he had told the country’s Treasury to stop producing new pennies coins.

According to Trump, the decision will help to cut down on government spending.

“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform as he returned to Washington from the Super Bowl.

“I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies.

“Let’s rip the waste out of our great nations budget, even if it’s a penny at a time,” he added.

DAILY POST gathered that one-cent coin, also known as a penny, was first issued by the federal government in 1793.

However, the issue of eliminating the pennies was part of Trump’s election campaign.

Trump’s mega-billionaire ally Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE, had raised the prospect in a post on X last month highlighting the production cost.

The United States Mint reportedly lost $85.3 million in the 2024 fiscal year that ended in September on the nearly 3.2 billion pennies it produced.

Obasanjo stated this on Sunday, while playing host to Dr. Dayo Israel, the new chairman, Board of Management of Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

The former president charged the new chairman to brace up for the challenges ahead and be ready to step on toes, if necessary.

He maintained that doing so would yield a successful tenure of office.

His words, “if you’re doing a job and you’re not stepping on toes, then you’re not effective.”

Obasajo, while citing an incident that happened some decades back shortly after he left office as Head of State, said he had to “sack” his daughter from his farm on account of late coming to work.

He said, “Shortly after I left office as Head of State, my first daughter, then at University of Ibadan studying Veterinary Medicine was engaged on my farm to gain some practical experience during long vacation.

“On day one, she resumed a quarter past seven in the morning as against the usual 7 O’clock. I warned her reminding her that she has an obligation to be of good example to other workers.

“I told her I will not hesitate to wield the big stick should the same be repeated going forward.

“To my amazement, the following day she was late to work again. I did not hesitate to send her back right from the gate.

“Not surprisingly, this had an indescribable effect on all my employees, saying ‘if Baba could do this to his daughter, who are we?’”

However, Obasajo counselled the new Chairman to be “just, fair, and humane”.

He commended Prof. Musa-Olomu, the Medical Director, for the tremendous accomplishments of his administration over the past seven and half years at the Centre.

Earlier, the FMCA Board Chairman, Dr Israel had described Baba Obasanjo as an international Colossus, full of wisdom and wits.

The Chairman restated his goal of turning the Centre into a premier medical facility where individuals from all over the world will come to get complete medical care.

American tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico were also set to go into effect Tuesday before Trump agreed to a 30-day pause, as the two countries acted to address his concerns about border security and drug trafficking.

Trump planned to hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming days.

“It is being scheduled and will happen very soon,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, said.

This isn’t the first round of tit-for-tat actions between the two countries.

In 2018, China and America engaged in an escalating trade war, when Trump repeatedly raised tariffs on Chinese goods and China responded each time.

This is coming a day after the Israeli military struck a weapons depot used by Palestinian militant group Hamas in southern Syria.

Despite the ceasefire, Israel has continued to carry out strikes on Lebanon.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its crackdown on illicit drug trade in Kano, intercepting large consignments of narcotics and arresting multiple suspects in a series of operations.

In a statement released on Sunday, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi confirmed the arrest of two suspects, both 23 years old, at Gadar Tamburawa on Zaria Road on February 3.

According to him, the operatives recovered 15,396 pills of tramadol concealed inside a gas cylinder.

“In another operation on the same day, operatives nabbed a female suspect, 35, with 27 blocks of skunk, a strain of cannabis weighing 15kg, at Sabon Gari area of Kano,” Babafemi said.

The agency also intercepted a shipment of 12,800 pills of tramadol 250mg heading to Shuwarin in Jigawa State.

The consignment was seized by NDLEA officers patrolling the Kabba-Obajana Highway in Kogi State on February 8, leading to the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect.

Babafemi further disclosed that operatives recovered 65 parcels of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis, weighing 1.6kg.

“The consignment was bound for Jigawa State when it was intercepted at a checkpoint, with a 32-year-old suspect taken into custody.”

Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA has continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities across Kano and other states in schools, worship centers, workplaces, and communities, among other locations, throughout the past week.

According to Babafemi, recent engagements included an enlightenment lecture at Taangayar Malam Abubakar Bichi, an Almajiri school in Bichi, Kano.

In a statement by the Judiciary’s Spokesperson, Baba Jibo Ibrahim, it was disclosed that Hudu Idris, a Registrar at the Upper Shari’a Court, has been demoted by one grade level and placed on compulsory retirement for receiving bribes. Similarly, the contract appointment of Abba Bala Gwarzo, a casual watchman at the same court, was terminated immediately.

The disciplinary action followed an investigation by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee (JPCC) into a petition filed by Alhaji Sani Bozo Rimin Gado. The petition accused Idris and Bala Gwarzo of intimidation and illegal monetary demands.

“Both individuals admitted to corrupt practices amounting to N214,000 during the investigation,” the statement revealed. “The Commission, in line with its commitment to maintaining judicial integrity, adopted the JPCC’s recommendations and took these measures.”

The Commission also addressed the suspension of Bilya Abdullahi, Auwalu Ibrahim Khalil, and Ismaila Garba, who were accused of forging a court reversal order. Following a police investigation and legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), it was determined that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute the officers.

The Commission resolved to lift their suspension but issued a strong warning to Bilya Abdullahi to avoid unethical practices.

The Judicial Service Commission reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and misconduct, emphasizing its resolve to uphold public trust in the judiciary.
