The Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority, BORBDA, host communities in Edo State have protested against the appointment of Femi Adekanbi as the new Managing Director of the federal agency.
DAILY POST reports that protesters drawn from Obayantor II, Ekosa, Agbomwoba, and Awanoba communities barricaded the office gate, preventing workers and visitors from accessing the building.
The protesters, who demanded the appointment of a Benin person as the agency’s Managing Director, also called for the removal of Femi Adekanbi, the newly appointed Managing Director/Executive Director of the establishment.
The spokesperson for the protesters, Mr Nosa Aigbogho, alleged that the host communities had been marginalised for 42 years in appointments to the agency’s board and the promotion of indigenous people to senior managerial positions.
According to him, the peaceful protest was to press home their demands regarding appointments to the agency’s management, where no one from the host communities was considered, despite being eminently qualified.
“Our protest at the BORBDA headquarters was to demand that the Oba’s recommendations for the appointment of someone from the host communities be respected by the appointing authorities.
“The protest also became inevitable when we discovered that the overtures made to various appointing authorities of the Federal Government for the appointment of a host community member as Managing Director were not honoured,” he said.
The protesting communities also drew the Federal Government’s attention to what they described as the agency’s poor corporate social responsibility over its many years of operation. They noted that the host communities had little or nothing to show as benefits from and, therefore, called for a change of approach.
He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to put an end to what they described as many years of marginalisation of the host communities by appointing a qualified person of Benin extraction as Managing Director, in fulfilment of the Federal Character principles and in line with the recommendation of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
He said the protesters had vowed to continue their demonstrations until the president acceded to their demands for the appointment of a Benin man as Managing Director.
DAILY POST recalls that in January 2025, the Federal Government constituted the boards of the twelve River Basin Authorities across the country, with the Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority having Mr Mike Ezomo as Chairman and Femi Adekanbi as Managing Director.

The Palestinian group Hamas has branded United States President Donald Trump’s recent comments about taking over Gaza as “racist.”
In a statement published on its Telegram channel, Hamas rejected Trump’s insistence on the US taking control of the Strip and transferring its two million inhabitants to Jordan and Egypt.
“Trump’s statements are racist and a call for ethnic cleansing, aimed at liquidating the Palestinian cause and denying the immutable national rights of our people,” Hamas said.
Hamas also stated that it remains committed to the ceasefire agreement and again accused Israel of failing to uphold its side of the deal.
“We emphasise that the occupation is the party that has not complied with its commitments and is therefore responsible for any complications or delays,” it added.
This comes after Trump warned that “all hell is going to break out” if Hamas fails to release all hostages being held in Gaza by Saturday afternoon.
Trump issued the threat while addressing journalists from the Oval Office in the White House after signing a series of executive orders.
Hamas had threatened to postpone the next hostage release, scheduled for Saturday, “until further notice,” accusing Israel of breaking the ceasefire agreement.

“We will swap one territory for another,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with The Guardian published on Tuesday.
Zelenskyy also revealed that Kyiv would cede part of the Kursk region, which it has held since its surprise incursion into Russia last August.
When asked which Russian-occupied areas Ukraine would demand in return, the Ukrainian leader replied: “I don’t know, we will see.
“But all our territories are important; there is no priority.”
Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to end Russia’s war against Ukraine soon and claims to have already made progress in conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to Trump, Putin “wants people to stop dying in the war.”
However, the American president’s team acknowledges that both sides will have to make concessions to end the conflict.

Experts at a one-day security summit in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Tuesday brainstormed on the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative, proposing ways forward for its successful implementation.
Themed “School Safety and Emergency Response Tips: Citizens’ Security”, the security summit, organised by the Ilorin West Division of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Kwara State Command, aimed at strengthening security measures in schools and their host communities.
The command reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of students, teachers, host communities, and critical infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, the Divisional Officer of Ilorin West Division, Muhammed K. Hamzat, said: “The summit was designed to review and strengthen grassroots security architecture, with a particular focus on safeguarding schools, students, teachers, and surrounding communities.”
He further explained that the programme aimed to tackle rising security challenges in schools, particularly kidnapping, cultism, bullying, drug abuse, and other forms of violence within the school environment.
In his keynote address, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Dr Umar Muhammed, emphasised the NSCDC’s leading role in the implementation of the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative. He also expressed concern over rising security threats in school environments and called for a coordinated and collective approach to mitigate risks.
According to him: “The safety of our children, teachers, and school communities is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and community leaders.
“This summit is both timely and necessary, as it provides stakeholders with practical strategies to enhance school security and emergency response mechanisms.”
The commandant further urged school administrators, teachers, students, and parents to actively support government policies and security measures aimed at protecting schools across the 16 local government areas of the state.
He reiterated that intelligence sharing, vigilance, and adherence to security protocols are essential in preventing security breaches.
In their separate remarks, Dr Uthman Atolagbe, the Balogun Alanamu, and Dr Adekola Abdulazeez of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, stressed the importance of collaboration among school administrators, community leaders, and security agencies.
They emphasised the need for community participation, strengthened surveillance, and early warning systems in preventing security threats.
The experts further aligned their recommendations with the global Safe Schools Declaration, advocating policy implementation, security awareness, and risk assessment measures within educational institutions.
NSCDC, through the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, NSSRCC, serves as the coordinating agency for the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative, which was established to protect students and create a secure learning environment.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has scrapped the work-from-home initiative introduced by his administration.
Sanwo-Olu has now directed all public servants to resume full on-site work from 1 April 2025.
In February 2024, the governor introduced the policy, allowing civil servants from levels one to 14 to work only three days a week.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, explained that the policy was scrapped following the implementation of the new minimum wage and other welfare measures for state workers.
“Further to the implementation of the new minimum wage in the state public service and other commendable measures put in place by this administration to improve the welfare and well-being of public servants, Mr Governor has approved the cancellation of the work-from-home initiative in the Lagos State Public Service.
“Accounting officers are enjoined to note the contents of this circular and give it the service-wide publicity it deserves,” the statement read.
