NMA threatens to withdraw services in two Akwa Ibom hospitals
The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Akwa Ibom State chapter has threatened to call up members working in Ibom Multi-Specialist hospital and St Luke’s hospital in the state, if the hospital managements continue to treat their welfare with levity and pay them pittance as salary.
The union urged the state government to set up committees that would ensure that all the doctors in those hospitals were paid good salary and provided with a condition of service that is commensurate with what is paid in the state.
This was part of the resolutions taken at the end of a weeklong 2025 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of NMA in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Fielding questions from newsmen, the State chairman of NMA, Dr. Aniekan Peter lamented that doctors in St Luke’s hospital Anua are paid “slave” salary and urged the management of the hospital to return it to state government if they cannot pay befitting salary to their doctors and other health workers.
He said, “AGM saw to securing the future of doctors through better remuneration. Look at the situations of doctors in Ibom Specialist hospital, we see where people work for several years, no increase in salary, no promotion, it’s unacceptable, we will soon issue an ultimatum to that hospital and withdraw the services of members.
“We want to appeal to the governor to set up a committee and ensure that all the doctors in that hospital are paid good salary and provided with a condition of service that is commensurate with what is paid in the state civil service.
“Also, doctors in St Luke’s hospital Anua are given slave salaries, we don’t want that to continue.
“If Anua feels that it cannot pay their doctors, they should return the hospital to the state government as it was before.
“A situation where doctors are being paid N150,000 is ridiculous. The Nigerian Medical Association will not accept that and we are going to take actions against St. Luke’s hospital.
“We want the state government to set up a committee also to ensure that that hospital is taken over by the state government if it cannot pay a living wage to doctors and other healthcare workers.”
The Chairman also urged the governor to prioritize the welfare of doctors and other health workers as he is already doing in health infrastructure, stressing, “you can’t build infrastructure without the labour, you have to match the two, side by side.”
Peter also disclosed that the AGM begged the governor to turn the Ibom multi-specialist hospital to Ibom Medical University and to ensure that training of manpower begins in earnest.
He said the facility is big enough to train doctors, medical lab scientists, physiotherapists, dentists, among others.
While commending the governor for appointing three of their members as commissioners and Special Advisers; Peter revealed that the union had commenced statewide sensitization programmes to churches in the 31 Local Government Areas of the state on maternal and child mortality rate in the state.

Osun, Lagos, Ogun top INEC’s first CVR update, South East lags behind
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday, published its first statistical update on the ongoing online Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, with Osun, Lagos, and Ogun States emerging as the top three states in terms of new registrations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the figures, Osun recorded the highest number of registrants with 393,269, representing 28.51% of the total, followed by Lagos with 222,205 (16.11%), Ogun with 132,823 (9.63%), and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with 107,682 (7.81%).
At the other end of the table, the South East states posted the lowest numbers. Ebonyi had just 261 registrants (0.02%), Imo 481 (0.03%), Enugu 484 (0.04%), while Abia recorded the highest from the zone with 772 (0.06%). Altogether, the five South East states accounted for only 1,998 registrants in the first week.
A zonal breakdown revealed that the South West is leading the process with 848,359 registrants, followed by the North Central and FCT with 250,218. The North West came next with 141,349, the North East recorded 77,653, the South South 59,676, while the South East trailed behind.
The statistics also showed that 27,089 persons living with disabilities have so far registered online.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed in a statement that a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians completed online pre-registration within the first week of the exercise, which commenced on Monday, August 18, 2025.
“The Commission is pleased to release the first weekly update of the exercise by providing details of registration by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability,” the statement read.
Olumekun disclosed that women accounted for a slightly higher number of registrants than men, with 717,856 (52.04%) females compared to 661,846 (47.96%) males. Young people between 18 and 34 years made up the majority of registrants with 860,286 (62.37%).
On occupational categories, students topped the list with 374,534 (27.15%).
Olumekun added that full details of the registration figures had been published on the Commission’s website and other official platforms for public access.

A civil rights group, the Tap Initiative, has scored Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun low, in its evaluation of her first year in office as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The group in a statement released to journalists in Abuja, observed that the CJN in the last one year have done very little in bringing to reality the much-needed reforms in the judiciary.
A few days before Justice Kekere-Ekun assumed office in August 2024, civil society groups, senior legal experts, members of academia, and other reform advocates led by Tap Initiative outlined a specific and measurable agenda for her leadership.
“One year later, the verdict is clear: while the rhetoric has been loud, tangible reforms remain elusive”, said the Executive Director of Tap Initiative, Mr. Martin Obono.
The group while commending the CJN for overseeing the retirement of judges found guilty of age falsification, observed that her leadership style appeared “risk-averse, relying on speeches and moral persuasion rather than structural reforms”.
Besides, Tap Initiative claimed that while Justice Kekere-Ekun’s first year has been characterized by a clear articulation of the judiciary’s challenges, there was little or no tangible evidence of systematic reform implementation.
“The Chief Justice has consistently emphasized the need for e-filing, case management technology, and virtual hearings. However, there has been no nationwide rollout or measurable progress in digital court processes”, Obono stated.
In the area of Judicial Accountability, the statement pointed out that while the CJN had stated that the National Judicial Council (NJC) will discipline non-performing judges, no concrete disciplinary actions leading to deterrence have taken place.
“While these measures are commendable, they are manifestly inadequate considering that many of these offenses are criminal. The CJN should have recommended prosecution by law enforcement agencies.
“This reflects the broader problem with judicial accountability: judges often receive a slap on the wrist rather than facing the serious consequences of criminal prosecution for criminal actions”, the group added.
Similarly, Obono on the area of Ex-parte Orders, claimed that despite concerns about their misuse in political cases, no new guidelines or policy changes have been publicly announced addressing the issue, adding that, “These guidelines are very important given that the 2027 general elections are around the corner and politicians and political parties will try to exploit the lacuna for their gains.”
Tap Initiative concluded that, “the gap between identified priorities and visible outcomes remains significant”, and stressed that the upcoming year will be crucial in translating policy commitments into practical reforms that bolster judicial integrity and efficiency.
The group warned that unless urgent action is taken, the CJN risks being remembered as a “cautious caretaker presiding over inertia”, adding that, “The judiciary is too broken for half measures,”
According to the statement, “If Justice Kekere-Ekun is to leave a meaningful legacy, she must move from rhetoric to reform, from warnings to sanctions, from speeches to visible action. The next twelve months will determine the future trajectory of her tenure and Nigeria’s judiciary.”

The Lagos State Government and China have restated their commitment to a strategic partnership on the promotion of their rich cultural heritage.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, spoke on the partnership during a courtesy visit by senior officials of the People’s Republic of China to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in Alausa, Lagos yesterday.
A statement quoted him to have said the partnership would strengthen the bond between Lagos and China to showcase rich cultural heritage, adding that his ministry was “passionate about the development and implementation of strategic plans to drive cultural growth, foster artistic and creative development, and showcase the rich cultural heritage and artistic expressions unique to Lagos State.”
Aregbe, who highlighted the Lagos Cultural Mission, acknowledged the remarkable contributions of the Chinese community in Lagos and reaffirmed the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to making the State the second home for the Chinese.
He said the strategic partnership between Lagos and China would also signal new opportunities to expand cultural values and deepen cooperation in areas such as cultural and natural heritage protection, research, tourism initiatives, and travel policies, geared towards creating more jobs and opportunities.
Aregbe, also expressed his satisfaction at the senior officials of the People’s Republic of China’s keen interest in several initiatives by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, particularly the 72-hour Lagos Cultural Weekend and the broader cultural calendar of the State.
Speaking on behalf of the team from China, the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Guangxi People’s Congress, Zhang Xiaoqin, reinforced his country’s shared vision and strategic partnership with Lagos State, noting that they are committed to programmes that would be beneficial to Lagosians, as well as Nigerian and Chinese citizens.
The Chinese delegation included Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing; Vice Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of Guangxi People’s Congress and Vice Director-General of the General Office of Guangxi People’s Congress, Lu Bo; Deputy Director-General of Guangxi Foreign Affairs Office and Head of the Coordinating Group of Guangxi African Work Team, Song Haijun; and Deputy Director-General of Guangxi Public Security Department and Deputy Head of Personnel Management Group of Guangxi African Work Team, Bin Zhengying, among others.
The courtesy visit was also attended by Directors and other top officials in the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has signed into law a bill establishing 13 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the government house on Monday, Governor Yahaya said the creation of the LCDAs was in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and was guided by the need to address population growth and ensure grassroots development.
The new LCDAs and their headquarters include Akko North (Amada), Akko West (Pindiga), Balanga South (Bambam), Billiri West (Taal), Dukku North (Malala), Funakaye South (Tongo), Gombe South (Bolari), Kaltungo East (Wange), Kwami West (Bojude), Nafada South (Birin-Fulani), Pero-Chonge (Filiya), Yamaltu East (Dadinkowa), and Yamaltu West (Zambuk).
Gov Yahaya maintained that the long-term benefits of creating the new councils, such as job creation, improved access to services, and enhanced security, far outweigh the financial burden to be incurred in setting them. “Like the creation of Gombe State in 1996, these LCDAs will usher in a new era of progress for our communities and the state at large,” he emphasized.
An Interim management committee and a transition technical team led by the deputy governor will oversee the set up of the new councils.
