Human rights activist and public commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has raised the alarm over the growing hunger crisis in Nigeria.

He warned that the situation has become visible, measurable and undeniable.

In a statement shared on X, Shehu blamed poor governance, greed, and incompetent leadership since 1999 for pushing millions of Nigerians into extreme poverty, starvation, and malnutrition.

“There is a direct, indirect, tangential and linear relationship between telling lies, deception and cheating. Whoever lies will cheat. Whoever cheats will lie and deceive,” he wrote, linking dishonesty in leadership to widespread suffering.

Shehu said millions of Nigerians, including men, women, and children, can no longer feed properly, with many also lacking access to healthcare and hygiene.

“The onset of hunger in Nigeria is visible, measurable and undeniable such that if the epidemic of hunger finally explodes, Somalia and Sudan’s hunger crisis will be a child’s play,” he warned.

He accused politicians and public office holders of pretending that the hunger crisis does not exist, stressing that such denial could backfire.

“Active politicians along with elected and other public office holders that are pretending away hunger in Nigeria will have themselves to blame when the inevitable happens,” Shehu said.

He further cautioned that if urgent action is not taken, the country could face chaos. “It will be a situation better described as: everybody for himself, God for us all, survival of the fittest and devil take the hindmost.”

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Brasília, Brazil for a two-day state visit to enhance relations between Nigeria and Brazil.

‎‎The presidential aircraft landed Brasília International Airport around 12:30 a.m. local time, 4. 30 a.m. (Nigerian time)

The President was received by Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, Carlos José Moreno Garcete, Ambassador of Brazil to Nigeria and top Nigerian government officials including Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Tinubu is scheduled to meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other senior Brazilian officials on Monday at the Planalto Palace.

‎Both will witness the signing of Memoranda of Understanding, MoUs, and address a joint press conference afterwards.

‎Key discussions will also explore partnerships in agriculture, energy transition, regional security and areas of mutual strategic interest.

Traders from neighbouring Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and other nearby island nations have stopped travelling to the Ikang International Market in Cross River State due to rising cases of piracy and militancy along the waterways.

Many of the merchants, according to community sources, have fallen victim to attacks, robberies, and kidnappings by sea pirates and militants.

At the weekend, youth leaders in Ikang town, Bakassi Local Government Area, raised the alarm and appealed to Governor Bassey Otu to provide boats and motorcycles to help them complement the efforts of the Navy and other security agencies deployed in their communities.

Presenting a position paper at the Bakassi Town Council Hall, the community youth leader, Prince Linus Asukwo-Bassey, said the lives of local leaders were now at risk because of their stance against criminal groups operating in the creeks.

“Big-time traders from Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and other countries have stopped coming to trade at the Bakassi International Market due to incessant pirate attacks on our waters.

“They are afraid of being kidnapped for ransom by self-acclaimed militants, who also seize their goods along the creeks,” he said.

He explained that speedboats and motorcycles would enable the youths to reach creeks and upland communities, track criminal elements, and respond swiftly to emergencies.

The youth leaders also disclosed that they had received several threats from ex-militants whom they had previously cautioned against exploiting government amnesty programmes.

They lamented that some suspects were often released because of their high-level political connections.

Asukwo-Bassey vowed that youths would resist the reintegration of recently pardoned ex-militants into the community unless they first show genuine remorse for their past activities.

“We are cautious about reintegrating ex-militants until they demonstrate repentance,” he stressed, alleging that some of them had already returned to the creeks to prepare for another phase of the amnesty programme.

The youth leader, however, commended Governor Otu for extending electricity and solar power to Ikang town.

He further appealed to the state government to remodel and upgrade the Ikang market into a full-fledged international fish market.

The Sultan urged lawyers to uphold truth and fairness above personal or financial interests. “It is only when the legal profession leads by example that the public can trust the system again,” he said.

Analysts note that a justice system skewed in favour of the wealthy discourages investment, fuels crime, and undermines democracy. Civil society reports show that Nigeria’s prisons are overcrowded with people awaiting trial, many of whom cannot afford legal representation or bail.

The Sultan’s comments reflect long-standing concerns over corruption and inequality in the justice sector and underscore calls for reforms, including transparent court processes, accessible legal aid, and stronger oversight of judicial practices.

Benue State ‎Governor, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia has extended his warm congratulations to the member representing Makurdi North State Constituency, Hon. Alfred Emberga, over his election as the new Speaker of the 10th Benue State House of Assembly.

‎Emberga was elected as the new Speaker on Sunday during an emergency sitting after the voluntary resignation of Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Dajoh.

‎Governor Alia, who commended the swift process that led to the emergence of a new leader of the legislative arm of government in the State, said the election of Hon. Emberga is a testament to the confidence reposed in him by his colleagues and a reflection of his commitment and ability to uphold democratic values.
