As one of the most influential voices on leadership, innovation and governance, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and astute scholar and Founder of the Lumumba Foundation, Prof. Patrick Lumumba, are scheduled to be amongst the speakers at the 2025 leadership conference organized by GOTNI Leadership Centre.
While Obasanjo will be speaking outside of politics and with concentration of business and entrepreneurship, Lumumba will focus on leadership and the need for the transformation of the human mind from the individual perspective.
Addressing the press Sunday on the forthcoming conference scheduled for September 5th and 6th, the convener and CEO of GOTNI Leadership Centre, Dr. Linus Okorie, said if Nigeria must make strategic progress, there must be an effort for leaders to deliberately, on their own, find themselves in rooms where their mindset can be transformed to inspire great results for their institutions.
Disclosing the theme of the conference, which will be centred on ‘Transforming minds, Inspiring results’, Okorie said individuals are expected to take leadership courses seriously because everything rises and falls on leadership.
He noted that the economy of the nation is already going through a challenging situation, with people going through a stretchy moment including leaders who are going through the pains of finding themselves in corners where they don’t want to be, and don’t know what to do.
He said for this reason, if transformation must take place within the system, leaders must continually be raised at the individual level to enable them run their lives, businesses, noting that with this, Nigeria will begin to move towards transformation.
“If Nigeria must make strategic progress, there must be an effort for leaders to deliberately, on their own to always find themselves in rooms where their mindset can be transformed to inspire great results for their institutions.
“Quality of humans that make decisions must have a shift in their mindset, and many times, blame go to politicians and when it’s time to vote, most people including those in business will deliberately support candidates that do not have leadership values die to stomach infrastructure or greed.
“For transformation to take place in our country, leaders must continually be raised at the individual level. Run your life first and succeed. Then run your business and succeed, then a critical mass of the people, then Nigeria will begin to move towards transformation.
“Our world view in this part of the world is that anybody who finds himself in the public service should take from the system. Before you occupy any world position, your world view should be that you are coming to serve systems and the society,” he said.
Other expected speakers include the Head of the EU to Nigeria, Ambassador Gautier Mignot; global business strategist and executive coach, Dr. Corrie Block; Minister of Women Affairs, Iman Sulaiman-Ibrahim.

Nigeria’s politicians have been charged to rise to the challenges of hardships confronting Nigerians and find ways to ameliorate the sufferings occasioned by the general economic crunch of the nation.
The Prelate of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church Worldwide, His Eminence Dr David Bob-Manuel, who issued the charge said as leaders, politicians must preoccupy themselves with the task of making life more meaningful for the downtrodden.
To achieve this, he asked politicians, including President Bola Tinubu, governors to govern with fear of God and not turn themselves to lords over the people.
Specifically, the cleric said as elected leaders, politicians must be compassionate in the use of the country’s resources to make life more meaningful for those who put them in positions of authority.
Addressing journalists on Sunday in Abuja, Dr Bob-Manuel, also called on Nigerians not only to be cooperative with leaders but to support them with prayers in the act of governance.
At the media briefing held at the National Headquarters Annex of the church, the C&S leader warned that political leaders must not turn themselves to lords over the electorate but to strive to fulfill all the promises made to enhance the living standards of the downtrodden during electioneering campaigns.
According to him, as leaders freely elected by the people for the purpose of enhancing their welfare, political leaders must do everything within their powers to cushion the hardship and reduce the suffering of the people to the barest minimum.
The prelate charged Nigerian citizens to always be guided by God in choosing who to lead them, adding that when righteous people are put into offices, everything would be well for the less privileged ones.
“When you are elected into positions of authority, you are expected to lead with the fear of God. You have to know that those who elected you are human beings, when they are suffering, you suffer with them as done by Christ.
“Anybody who is in position must be compassionate, must show compassion to those who elected them into that office because they are human beings and you must care for them, think of them and not question of when you have succeeded, you now turn to a lord over them, you no longer care about the welfare of the people, that is not the way”.
On the part of the church, the cleric said that though the leaders don’t take part in active politics, they are allowed to pray for politicians seeking elective offices for God’s guidance.
He said that individual church members are not forbidden from taking active part in politics, adding that the people rejoice when the righteous rule, noting that the church in the last hundred years had contributed tremendously to the educational, political and economic growth of the country.

Mob Attack: Kwara Vows to Bring Perpetrators to Book

The Kwara State government has said that efforts are in top gear with law enforcement agencies to bring the killers of a woman, Khadijah, who was mistaken for a kidnapper in the state, to book.
THISDAY reports that a mob had on Thursday, at Ipata Market area of Ilorin, the state capital, attacked a woman later identified by the police as a vagabond to stupor, following the suspicion that she was a kidnapper.
The woman later died the same day at the General Hospital, Ilorin from the injuries she sustained during the mob attack.
A statement issued in Ilorin by the state Commissioner for Social Development, Dr Mariam Nnfatima Imam, stated that the state government would bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book so as to serve a deterrent to others.
Imam warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands, advising them to always report suspected individuals to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
She condemned the jungle justice meted out to the deceased, describing the act as incivility and barbaric.
The commissioner further emphasised the state government’s commitment to protecting the rights of every resident and maintained that the government would not tolerate any act of rascality and illegality capable of threatening the existing peace and harmony across the state.
She, therefore, warned residents to desist from taking laws into their hands, stressing that anyone who engages in such acts will face the full wrath of the law.
Imam commiserated with the family of the victim of the jungle justice, saying: “The state government is working tirelessly with the law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.”
She also called on residents not to panic, but to support the state government by providing necessary information to security agencies to surmount the security challenges in some parts of the state.
Meanwhile, the family of the victim of the jungle justice, had on Friday demanded justice for her.
The family claimed that the deceased had been battling a severe mental illness for decades.
“She was not a criminal, she was only sick. She battled with brain illness for many years. Sometimes, she would go out to beg for money just to feed herself and her children before returning home.
“We, her family, tried all we could to support her. It is very painful that people mistook her condition for criminality and ended her life in such a cruel manner,” a sister of the victim said.
She condemned the mob action, calling on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, President Bola Tinubu, and relevant security agencies to intervene and ensure that those behind Khadijah’s killing were arrested and prosecuted.

A day of celebration at the annual August meeting in Ugwunagbo local government area of Abia State on Monday, August 18, 2025, turned tragic when a popular entertainer, Mrs Nwandinma Dickson, widely known as “Nwayi Garri”, suddenly slumped and died during a performance.
The 65-year-old Dickson, a native of Oza Umuebukwu in Nneji autonomous community, Ugwunagbo LGA, was scheduled to participate in dance and drama at the high-profile event.
Dressed in her performance costume, she moved around different canopies, exchanging greetings and entertaining guests with her usual theatrics.
Unfortunately, in the middle of her display, she stooped briefly and then slumped, making the audience assume that the fall was part of her act and continued cheering, only to realize minutes later that she was unresponsive.
A prompt response came from the Mayor of Ugwunagbo LGA who provided a vehicle to rush her to the hospital, but unfortunately, medical personnel pronounced her dead on arrival.
Family members who spoke to ABN TV, said late Mrs Dickson had initially expressed reluctance to attend the meeting but eventually decided to honor her scheduled performance.
Residents of Ugwunagbo and the larger Abia community who are mourning the loss of “Nwayi Garri,” said she would be remembered for her lively spirit and contributions to local cultural life.
Community sources also told ABN that they are awaiting official report from the relevant authorities about the cause of the ace performer’s death, even as some opined that she may have suddenly experienced blood pressure issues.

Tell Ogoni Story the Right Way, HYPREP Tells Youths

A call has gone to Ogoni youths to ensure that Ogoni stories are told and heard in the right way.
The call was made by a Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, at the closing ceremony of a training of 100 Ogoni youths in Creative Arts at the Theatre Arts Department, University of Port Harcourt by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).
Zabbey urged the beneficiaries of the training to use the skills acquired to ensure that the Ogoni stories are told and heard in the right way.
The trainees, who had completed a four-month training in script writing, film production and make-up are beneficiaries of the HYPREP sustainable livelihood programme aimed at providing high demand skills to Ogoni youths in the lucrative creative arts and entertainment industry.
Zabbey, while describing the Creative Arts Training as well as other programmes and interventions as HYPREP’s strategic sustained effort to create alternative sources of livelihood, said: “Targeted capacity building for Ogoni youths and women remains a central strategy in HYPREP’s livelihood restoration and improvement efforts.
“Our goal is to reach every part of the Ogoni community and ensure that no group or talent pool is left behind. This training is a deliberate step to empower young people who aspire to make their mark in the creative and entertainment industry.”
While commending the trainees for producing four short films within the training period, one of which was premiered at the ceremony, Dirty Festival, the project coordinator stated that the training would serve as a springboard into the industry, enable them earn a living, become entrepreneurs, open new doors opportunities for themselves and communities.
The three other movies are Open Pain, Bomu and Green War.
He enjoined them to utilise their skills and platforms to promote civic responsibility, peace and environmental sustainability, urging them to ensure that Ogoni is heard in the right way, speak for HYPREP and highlight the progress being made in implementing the recommendations of the UNEP Report.
Other speakers at the event, including the Director, Technical Services of HYPREP, Prof. Damian-Paul Aguiyi; Dr Ovunda Ihunwo, Head of Department, Theatre Arts Department, Uniport; Chief Douglas Experience, Project Manager; Halibiz Consult Ltd and Mrs Josephine Nzidee, Head, Sustainable Livelihood of HYPREP, all applauded HYPREP for the training and charged the trainees to maximise the opportunity.
Trainees were later presented Certificate of Participation.
With the wrapping up of the Creative Arts training of the 100, HYPREP has trained 230 Ogoni youths in high demand skill sets including Seafaring (100) and Aviation (30).
The project will, this year, commence training in other skill areas including Mechatronic, Aviation, Full-Stack Development, Commercial Diving, Underwater Welding and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Still in the offing is the training for Ogoni Persons Living with Disabilities in five skill sets — Fish farming, Basic Computer Skills, Photography, Fashion and Design and Shoemaking — in line with their Needs Assessment and HYPREP’s policy of inclusivity.
