Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has said that it is not within his power to determine who succeeds him when he leaves office in January 2028.

The governor made the assertion when stakeholders from Owerri Zone paid him a solidarity visit at Government House, Owerri, on Thursday.

He advised that the Charter of Equity should not be used as a tool to create confusion in the state, emphasizing that what is paramount is the collective interest of the state towards achieving progressive development.

According to him, the person that will emerge as his successor must be a product of a democratic process and not chosen by him or by a few individuals.

Uzodinma stressed that the Charter of Equity was borne out of a clear intention to restore moral order, eliminate confusion and check imbalance in the governance of the state.

“It is a document to let us know and remember the imbalance in the system and see how best to correct it, but not for people to enter social media and circulate fake news.

“We cannot continue like this every time. I invite the leaders from Owerri Zone to join me cure this confusion. I commend you and other stakeholders from the zone for your sense of unity and cooperation to achieve common goals,” he said.

The governor enjoined Owerri Zone to carry other zones in the state along in their desire for the governorship position and allow the will of God and that of the electorate to prevail.

Uzodinma further implored the leaders of the zone to join him to eliminate the confusion that is surrounding the Charter of Equity, noting that if the issue is not resolved under his administration, it will be difficult for others coming after him to resolve.

He noted that the state desires a selfless leader who is committed to serving the people, making strong and informed decisions that will encourage even development.

“I’m happy to hear that you are united, therefore, I advise the leaders to remain focused and resist the temptation to be confrontational. I further encourage the leaders from the zone, particularly those aspiring for the state’s number one seat, to slow down on early campaigns since the electioneering period is still far.

“Let me re-emphazise the need for you to channel your energies and resources to help improve security, healthcare and economic well being of the state,” he added.

Earlier in his speech, the spokesperson for the delegation, Chief Charles Amadi said the visit was to express solidarity and to commend the governor for what he described as his ingenuity in establishing the Imo Charter of Equity, which according to him, will check imbalance, injustice and foster peace in the state.

Amadi said the leaders and people of Owerri Zone are resolved to lend their absolute support to the Charter of Equity, assuring the governor that the zone is united and now works in harmony as a group.

“We now have a common front with a resolve to support any candidate from the zone who is adopted. We commend you for your numerous infrastructural projects, and appeal that the promise for power shift as enshrined in the Charter of Equity be kept,” Amadi said.

Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Radda, has approved the appointment of 15 new Senior Special Assistants and a General Manager for the State Hotels Board.

He explained that the move is aimed at strengthening service delivery and advancing the governors “Building Your Future” agenda.

Those appointed include Hajiya Aisha Barda as Senior Special Assistant on School Feeding, Musa Ado Faskari as Senior Special Assistant on Community Development Programmes (CDP) for Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency, Nu’uman Imam Muhammed as Senior Special Assistant on CDP for Batagarawa/Charanchi/Rimi Federal Constituency, and Dr. Habibu AbdulKadir as Senior Special Assistant on CDP for Matazu/Musawa Federal Constituency.

Others are Ali Mamman Bakori, appointed as Senior Special Assistant on CDP for Bakori/Danja Federal Constituency; Labaran Magaji Ingwawa, SSA on CDP for Ingawa/Kankia/Kusada Federal Constituency; Bishir Sabi’u, SSA on CDP for Jibia/Kaita Federal Constituency; and Murtala Adamu Baure, SSA on CDP for Baure/Zango Federal Constituency.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to begin a nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of failing to honour agreements on the revitalisation and proper funding of Nigeria’s public universities.

Speaking at a press conference in Jos on Thursday, ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, said lecturers have endured over two years of unfulfilled promises and government delay tactics.

He listed the major issues as the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, unpaid salary arrears, withheld promotions, and poor welfare for retired lecturers.

“We have written several letters to the Federal Government, urging them to address these issues amicably. Unfortunately, the government has ignored all our appeals,” Piwuna said.

“It is always the government that pushes our union to go on strike. If nothing changes, ASUU may have no choice but to take action.”

The ASUU president also rejected the government’s proposed loan scheme for tertiary institution staff, describing it as a “trap.”

“Our members do not need loans. What we need is the implementation of agreements that will improve our purchasing power. The government still owes us three months’ salaries, yet it is asking us to borrow money,” he said.

ASUU further criticised the establishment of more universities without sustainable funding, warning that it has weakened standards and reduced Nigeria’s global ranking.

On pensions, the union lamented that professors who worked for more than 40 years now earn as little as ₦150,000 monthly, despite the high cost of living.

Piwuna revealed that ASUU will wait for the outcome of a government meeting scheduled for August 28 before deciding on its next steps. However, members will hold rallies across campuses next week to express their frustration.

“Time is running out. We cannot continue to wait endlessly while the future of Nigerian universities is destroyed,” he warned.

Speaking at the event, Chairman, Yewa North Local Government Area, Olusola Akinbode, who spoke on behalf of all the chairmen of the Local governments within border towns, emphasised the importance of collaborating neighboring nations for peace and prosperity.

Akinbode pointed out that border towns such as Seme, Igbokofi, Tobolo, Ilara, and Ipokia in Nigeria, alongside Cotonou in Benin, were expected to experience improved safety and increased commercial activity as a result of the initiative.

“Our shared borders are not just lines dividing two nations; they are zones of opportunities. This partnership will enhance security, reduce illegal activities and foster economic growth that will benefit our border communities,” he said.

He noted that local business leaders and residents have expressed optimism that the agreement would curb crime and open new opportunities for trade and employment.

Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to urgently investigate a deadly attack that claimed 15 lives in Plateau State.

The human rights group said gunmen stormed several villages in Chakfem, Mangu Local Government Area, on Monday evening.

The affected villages include Tim, Koppang, Mihidihin, Jiblang, Jilem, Jibin and Manden.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers killed people they encountered and also set fire to homes and other properties. More than 200 residents were forced to flee their communities.

Amnesty International described the incident as another example of how rural communities in Plateau remain exposed to repeated, violent raids. It accused Nigerian authorities of failing to protect citizens from what it called “rampaging gunmen.”

“Failure to stop these attacks is costing people their lives and livelihoods. Without immediate action, many more lives may be lost,” the group warned.

The organisation recalled that between December 2023 and February 2024, at least 1,336 people were killed in Plateau, including 533 women and 263 children.

In the same period, 29,554 people were displaced. Earlier in April 2025, at least 51 people were killed in a separate attack in Bassa Local Government Area.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has restated that the approved voter registration age remains 18 years.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Yobe state, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the clarification this on Thursday when he paid an advocacy visit to the Emir of Bade, Alhaji Abubakar Umar- Suleiman, in Gashua.

The REC was responding to Suleiman’s question on whether a 16 or 17-year-old would be allowed to register to vote when he/she turned 18 in 2027.

“Only eligible citizens of 18 years and above are allowed to register and vote under the Electoral Act,” the REC said.

According to him, voter registration is a critical aspect of the electoral process which could make or mar the integrity of any election.

Abdullahi further explained that he was at the palace to solicit the Emir’s support in enlightening the people in his domain for the successful conduct of the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR.

The REC pointed out that INEC is mandated by the law to collaborate with stakeholders and review voter register ahead of any election.

He said online voter registration had already begun on August 18, while the physical registration was slated for August 25, adding that both components would last for one year.

The REC said the physical registration would be conducted at INEC headquarters in Damaturu and its registration centres across the 17 local government areas of the state.

He listed the target beneficiaries to include residents who had not been previously registered, those who turned 18, those with issues with Permanent Voter Card, PVCs, and those who wished to change their polling units.

To avert crisis that could stoke division and acrimony in Imojo Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area, the Ekiti State government has ordered the repeat of selection process to occupy the royal seat of Olumojo, in strict compliance with traditions and customs of the town.

Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye gave the directive on Thursday while interfacing with stakeholders from the community in her office in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The directive stemmed from a petition, dated 30th July, 2025, written by a contestant, Prince Feyisayo Fagbayi, raising eyebrows over how the process leading to the emergence of Prince Toba Fagbayi was allegedly compromised and undertaken in sharp contravention to the customs and traditions of Imojo town.

The royal seat became vacant following the death of Oba Samuel Olatunji, who was killed by unknown gunmen along Ipao-Oke Ako-Irele road, on January 29, 2024.

Mrs Afuye, according to a statement signed by her Special Assistant on Media, ordered that a new selection process should be done within a period of 14 days.

She directed that the Ekiti State Chiefs Law and Olumojo Chieftaincy Declarations, which stipulated that Ifa divination should be adopted, must be fully complied with, to avert unnecessary controversy in the town.

To inject transparency into the process that will be done at an agreeable location, the Deputy Governor advised all the contestants to bring their Ifa priests, alongside the kingmakers and local government officials, to work on a process that will be acceptable to all the contending forces.

“The government is not interested in who becomes the Olumojo, but the selection process must be transparent . Go back home and do the needful, it is in your own interest.

“Governor Biodun Oyebanji doesn’t like a situation whereby a town will be operating without an Oba. There are so many traditions and rites that a Regent can’t perform.

“Again, we knew that you may find it difficult to develop in the area of infrastructures if you don’t have a king. Even take a look at the security threat in your area. You need a king who can work with government to achieve security of lives and property.

“Go back home and do what you are supposed to do. Consult Ifa first and if two candidates emerged through the process, the Olumojo Chieftaincy Declarations allows that the kingmakers can vote,” she said.

The Head of the Kingmakers in the town, Chief Ayo Dada, appreciated the government’s intervention, saying it will help in fostering peace and unity in Imojo Ekiti.

Chief Dada, who holds the traditional title of Elejura, insisted that the Ifa priests that will preside over the selection will be brought by the chiefs.

The community leader dismissed the widespread notion that the kingmakers have been bribed, saying nothing of such had happened.

“We have not collected money from anybody. We are ready to do what is right and just in this matter, because the development of our town is paramount to us.”
