A suspected armed robber was reportedly shot dead during a gun battle with police at Cantonments in Accra on Wednesday night, eyewitnesses have said.
The incident occurred around 10pm near a hotel known as Adwoa Wangara. According to an eyewitness account, bloodstains, a pair of slippers, and a spent bullet casing were spotted on the roadside directly opposite the hotel.
“I noticed there was blood on the other side of the road, just in front of the hotel. There were two slippers left behind. I got curious and went closer to take a look. I saw bloody footprints and a bullet casing. From the scene, it was clear it wasn’t a scuffle between just two people — it involved more,” the eyewitness recounted.
Two men who claimed to have witnessed the incident emerged from a building opposite the hotel and shared further details with the eyewitness and their friend.
“They told us the men involved were armed robbers who had been pursued by the police. During the chase, the robbers opened fire on the officers, prompting them to return fire. That’s when one of the suspects was gunned down,” the eyewitness explained.
It is believed the other robbers fled the scene — some leaving their footwear behind. Although it was confirmed that the suspects were travelling in a vehicle, it remains unclear whether they fled with it.
“From what I saw, there was no continuous trail of blood, which makes me think the others were not hit and likely escaped in their vehicle,” the witness added.
The incident took place within the Cantonments area, a well-patrolled zone with CCTV coverage, raising expectations that security footage may aid in the ongoing investigation.
As of the time of reporting, police have yet to issue an official statement.
