Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Atiku, Peter Obi pay tribute to fallen heroes

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has joined millions of Nigerians in honouring the country’s fallen heroes as the nation marks the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
In a statement on Thursday, Atiku said he and his family were united with Nigerians in solemn remembrance and deep gratitude to the brave men and women of the Armed Forces who have defended the nation.
He paid tribute to those who paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, while saluting serving personnel for their courage, discipline and unwavering commitment to the safety and unity of Nigeria.
According to him, the selflessness, resilience and patriotism of members of the Armed Forces remain a constant reminder that the country’s freedoms are secured by their devotion and sacrifice.
Atiku expressed appreciation to both fallen and serving personnel, thanking them for their service to the nation.
On his part, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peter Obi, paid glowing tribute to fallen Nigerian soldiers as the nation marks Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Posting on X, Obi described the day as a solemn moment to honour men and women of the Armed Forces who laid down their lives in service to the country.
He said the annual remembrance serves as a reminder for Nigerians to recommit themselves to building a nation worthy of the sacrifices made by its fallen heroes.
According to Obi, the true resting place of a soldier is not only in the grave but in the hearts and minds of the people they protected, noting that while citizens slept peacefully, the soldiers stood guard at the frontlines, under harsh weather conditions.
Obi stressed that the greatest honour Nigerians can give to the fallen heroes is to live lives that promote peace, unity and progress, adding that leadership must inspire hope, especially for the less privileged.
He also extended his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, acknowledging that the day remains a painful reminder of their loss, but assured them that the sacrifices of their loved ones were not in vain.
Obi prayed for the souls of the fallen heroes to rest in eternal honour.
He wrote: “We are told that a soldier’s true grave is not in the earth, but in the hearts and minds of those they protected—those who slept peacefully while their heroes stood guard. In the heat of the sun and the chill of the night, they stood at the frontlines for us.
“Perhaps the most fitting honour we can bestow upon these heroes is to live lives that promote peace and progress. We must provide leadership that gives hope to the hopeless.
“For the families of these fallen heroes, today is not just a date on the calendar; it is a reminder of an empty chair and a voice that is no longer heard, while we cannot fill that void, we want to assure you that their immense sacrifice was never in vain.”
