Blessing Ibunge in Port Harcourt

Women wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed their commitment in ensuring President Bola Tinubu is re-elected in 2027.

The women made the expression, during the State APC women summit held in Port Harcourt, with the theme “The Effectiveness of Women in Politics.”

The programme, it was observed attracted thousands of  members of the party from across the 23 local government areas of the state, including leaders of the women wing of APC at the national level.

In her remarks, the APC National Women leader, Dr Mary Idele, described APC as a party where women are not only welcomed but valued and elevated, and applauded the national leadership of the party for the deliberate policies that promotes women’s inclusion.

The APC national women leader also  stated  that the progress of Nigerian women remains central to national development, adding that the women’s wing of the party “stands solidly behind the President today, tomorrow and into 2027.”

She urged women to become active participants rather than spectators in politics, insisting that their voices matter in every ward, local government and in every constituency.

The APC women leader also declared support for the Special Seats for Women Bill before the National Assembly, describing it as a matter of justice, representation and the future of our daughters.

“I also stand here to declare our support for the special seat for women bill which is currently before the National Assembly. The bill is not just about politics. Please listen to me. The bill is not just about politics. It’s about justice. It’s about representation. 

“It’s about the future of our daughters. It’s about the future of our sisters. It’s about waking up. It’s about women making up half of the population. We desire the seat at the table where decisions about lives are made,” she said.

Earlier in her opening remarks, Rivers State APC women leader,  Darling Amadi, said beyond focus on successful election for the party, the summit was about transformative leadership that touches every aspect of life.

Amadi  described President Tinubu, his wife, Senator Olaremi Tinubu, State chairman of the party, Chief Tony Okocha, others as dynamic leaders of the party and urged the women to continue to play active role in shaping progress within their communities.

She said: “We are here to equip the women with knowledge, confidence and support needed to participate in governance.

“By empowering our women today, we invest in a stronger future where every woman can live and contribute meaningfully to the Renewed Hope Agenda. And recognising the position for women will promote our own inclusive and ensure our rightful places in decision making in the process.” 

She appreciated the women leaders across the state for their dedication and hardwork that made the summit successful, adding that “Your efforts has continue to strengthen the foundation of our political family”. 

In his solidarity massage, the APC State chairman, Okocha applauded the women for their effective involvement in the activities of the party in the state.

He lauded Senator Olaremi Tinubu for her empowerment strides across the nation, assuring continuous support for the women wing of the party in Rivers State.

Okocha urged party members to remain steadfast ahead of 2027, insisting there is “no vacancy in Aso Rock” while reiterating support for the President’s second-term bid.

In her keynote address, a former Commissioner in Rivers State , Mrs Inime Aguma noted that no democracy can thrive when half its population is underrepresented.

She added that countries with higher levels of female political participation invest more in health, education, clean water and social protection.

She advised the women to insist on their positions before they cast their votes, stressing that 35% affirmative is not much to ask.
