Political commentator Mahdi Shehu has said the United States will one day lose its position as a global superpower, describing such a shift as natural and inevitable.
Shehu made the remarks in a post shared on X.
He criticised the role of the United States in global affairs, particularly its involvement in other countries.
“Super powers existed before America in the past. America will be a past story, not in the distant future, and another country will take over the superpower leadership. That is natural law.”
He accused the United States of acting as what he called the police watchdog of the world.
He said it interferes in the affairs of other nations under different excuses.
“They come into our country, go straight to discuss with groups and local people. That is irresponsible. That is not democracy,” he said.
He added that the US should focus on solving its internal problems.
Shehu claimed that insecurity remains a serious issue in the United States itself.
“Every day, more than 130 people are being killed in America,” he said.
He questioned why Nigeria is often singled out in global discussions, especially on religious violence.
“Christians are being killed every day, not only in Nigeria but all over the world. So what makes Nigerian Christians special?” he asked.
He insisted that America’s interest in Nigeria is not about religion.
According to him, the real issue is Nigeria’s natural wealth.
“They are after destroying Nigeria, dismembering Nigeria, planting crises so that we lose focus, and then they come in under the name of peacekeeping,” he alleged.
He also argued that Nigeria’s vast resources make the country a target.
“Nigeria has enormous natural resources, more than many countries in the world, and they are hungry for them,” Shehu said.
He noted that while the US may no longer need Nigeria’s oil, it is interested in rare minerals.
Shehu further claimed that Western countries deny Nigeria access to technology and training. “They refuse to give us the technology and training we need, even to fight insurgency,” he said.
On foreign relations, he suggested that Nigeria could explore stronger ties with countries like China and Russia.
“China may have its own agenda, but it is much better than America’s agenda,” he said
He added that Russia’s interests are also better than America’s.
He dismissed claims that China is trapping countries with debt, arguing instead that Western-controlled institutions are more responsible for financial pressure on developing nations.
“These loans keep coming, but we are not seeing much on ground,” he said, while noting that Chinese-funded infrastructure projects are visible.
