Islamic clerics under the platform of League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland have advised the United States and international bodies to avoid any form of generalisations or external interference that could undermine internal peace efforts in Nigeria.

The clerics urged the US and international bodies to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

They spoke in a communique issued at the end of a meeting held in Ibadan on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Jamiu KewuLere, President, Leaque of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Sheikh Saadallah Bamgbola, Vice President, Leaque of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Sheikh AbdulGaniy Agbotomokekere, Grand Patron, Leaque of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Sheikh Muhammad Rabiu, Chief Imam of Osun State, ⁠Sheikh AbdulHakeem Yayi, Chief Imam of Ondo State, Sheikh Seifudeen Olowooribi, Chairman, Lagos State Rabita, Sheikh Habeebullah Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory, Chairman Board of Trustee , League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland and Sheikh Mustapha Olawale Hossein Doak, General Secretary, League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland.

DAILY POST reports that US President Donald Trump had designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over alleged Christian genocide.

But the Islamic clerics in the communique read by Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Sheikh AbdulRasaq AbdulAzeez Ishola, appealed to the US and the international community to avoid hasty generalisations on the issue.

The Islamic clerics maintained that Nigeria is a sovereign state and its domestic challenges should be addressed through national dialogue, cooperation, and homegrown solutions, not through foreign impositions or biased narratives.

They also advised Nigerians to remain steadfast in peace, mutual respect and national unity.

“We urge all international bodies and world leaders, particularly the United States of America, to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and avoid hasty generalizations or external interference that could undermine our internal peace efforts.

“Nigeria is a sovereign state, and our domestic challenges like those faced by many nations should be addressed through national dialogue, cooperation, and homegrown solutions, not through foreign impositions or biased narratives.

“We call upon global media outlets, international observers, and foreign governments to engage in responsible reporting and diplomacy that promotes peace rather than fuels misunderstanding. Nigeria’s image and unity are too valuable to be tainted by misinformation or politically motivated assertions.

“We, the Imams and Alfas of Yoruba Land, call upon all Nigerians Muslims, Christians, and traditionalists alike to remain steadfast in peace, mutual respect, and national unity. Let us continue to demonstrate that our diversity is our strength and that faith and ethnicity should never be used as tools of division,” parts of the communique read.
