Hot SourceThe member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Constituency of Akwa Ibom State in the House of Representatives, Dr Patrick Umoh, has condemned what he described as ‘defamatory’ attacks on Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The online attacks were launched on the Senate President by one Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio.
In a statement on Wednesday, Umoh demanded an immediate halt of the “shameful charade” being perpetrated by Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio.
The Rep accused the woman of waging an “unprovoked and dishonourable campaign of character assassination” through inflammatory social media posts that he said lacked any factual basis.
Declaring that “enough is enough”, Umoh warned that the tirades not only damage the Senate President but also tarnish the Akpabio family name and the reputation of Essien Udim, one of the three local government areas he represents in the House of Representatives.
Invoking shared cultural values of respect for elders and sanctity of truth, Umoh, who served as Akpabio’s Senior Legislative Aide and later as Special Assistant during his time as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, urged Mrs Akpabio to “reflect soberly on the consequences” of her actions.
Calling on members of the public to discountenance the allegations, Umoh noted that Akpabio’s eight years as governor transformed Akwa Ibom into a “model of progress and modernity”, stressing that his reputation remains intact.
Citing landmark projects in roads, schools, and healthcare, the lawmaker added that Akpabio’s leadership of the 10th Senate continues to exhibit “rare capacity and statesmanship” at a critical period in Nigeria’s history.
