African legacy foundations call for urgent, unified action on Sudan crisis

A coalition of foundations established in honour of some of Africa’s most influential liberation leaders is calling for a decisive, African-led intervention in Sudan’s worsening conflict.

In a joint communiqué issued this week, the foundations named after Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Walter and Albertina Sisulu, Kofi Annan, and Patrice Emery Lumumba urged continental institutions to act swiftly to restore peace, protect civilians, and halt what they describe as an impending state collapse.

The group warned that Sudan’s protracted conflict represents part of Africa’s “unfinished work of decolonisation,” arguing that foreign interests and militarised political factions are deepening instability across the region. According to the communiqué, only a coordinated African response can prevent further deterioration.

The foundations stressed that any credible peace process must be anchored in Pan-African values and prioritise the voices and needs of ordinary Sudanese people. They cautioned that negotiations dominated by armed political elites could entrench impunity and pave the way for renewed violence.

They also underscored the need for a justice-centred transition, calling for comprehensive truth-telling, accountability for abuses, and mechanisms to address longstanding grievances. Without these measures, the communiqué notes, Sudan risks repeating cycles of conflict that have defined its recent history.

The coalition further appealed for immediate, unhindered humanitarian access, highlighting that the crisis has produced the world’s largest displacement situation, with millions uprooted internally or forced to flee across borders. Aid agencies, they said, must be supported to reach besieged communities without geopolitical interference.

The African Union (AU), IGAD and other regional blocs were urged to adopt a unified diplomatic front, while the United Nations and international partners were encouraged to channel assistance through African-led efforts.

“The destiny of Sudan is inseparable from the destiny of Africa,” the statement concluded, pledging stronger collaboration among the foundations to promote peace and solidarity across the continent.

Meanwhile, reports from North Kordofan indicate renewed clashes between rival forces, with humanitarian conditions worsening in and around El Fasher. Aid teams continue to appeal for safe corridors to reach civilians trapped by the fighting as of mid-November 2025.
