AFCON: Retain Eric Chelle despite Super Eagles losing to Morocco – Bashir Ahmad to NFF

Sevilla head coach Matias Almeyda remains firmly behind Akor Adams despite the forward’s poor form in front of goal, DAILY POST reports.

The Nigeria international has failed to register a goal in his last eight league appearances for the Rojiblancos.

Akor also has a poor record of being constantly caught offside in LaLiga this season.

The striker has been caught offside 22 times, more than anyone in Europe’s top five  leagues.

The 25-year-old was forced to turn off the comments section on his X account this week after facing cyberbullying from Sevilla fans.

Almeyda is however optimistic the former Montpellier player will hit top form soon.

“He is a footballer who works a lot and needs confidence. I prefer that he is trying to right his wrongs rather than standing still,” the Argentine was quoted by Orgullobiri.

Akor has registered two goals one assist in 12 league appearances for Sevilla this season.

Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has explained how he was able to score two goals in Nigeria’s 3-1 victory over Uganda.

He also hailed Samuel Chukwueze who helped set up both of his goals in Nigeria’s 3-1 victory against Uganda in the final Group C match at the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON,  in Morocco on Tuesday evening.

The Club Brugge midfielder netted twice in the second half and was awarded Man of the Match for his excellent performance at the Fez Stadium in Morocco.

After the game, Onyedika praised Chukwueze’s performance and explained that the goal-scoring combination was something they had practiced during training.

“It’s exactly what we train for, so it’s just a matter of seconds. You have to make a decision, and sometimes when you decide, it doesn’t happen right away, but you just have to be ready,” he said.

“I know Samuel really well, and every time he dribbles, he always looks for the first person and then cuts back. I try to stay in that position as much as I can, and today I was in a good spot again.”

The Club Brugge midfielder was happy to win the Man of the Match award and said it was the result of all his hard work over the years.

“I feel really happy and I can’t explain why.  This is the moment I’ve been working for my whole life, and I’m really happy it finally happened,” he said.

Nigeria won their match and finished first in Group C with nine points, which allowed them to move on to the next round.

Eric Chelle, head coach of Super Eagles, has addressed Victor Osimhen’s reaction after substituting the Galatasaray attacker during Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday.

Chelle made the change in the 86th minute of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, opener which visibly affected Osimhen and led to questions during the post-match press conference.

Speaking on the matter, Chelle disclosed that he had already talked with the former Napoli striker.

“We talked and it will stay between him and me,” Chelle said.

“If you want more information, you’ve to tell Osimhen to ask me,” he insisted.

Meanwhile, Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman scored the goals for Chelle’s side against the Taifa Stars.
