Kano: Police arrest 20 suspects in anti-thuggery operation

The Kano State police command has arrested 20 suspects during a clearance operation aimed at eliminating thuggery (Daba) within Kano metropolis.

This was contained in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on Friday.

According to the statement, the operation was part of efforts to ensure the safety and security of residents.

It further stated that the operation conducted between January 1st to 3rd, 2025 also led to the recovery of dangerous weapons and illicit drugs.

“The clearance operation was conducted under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, and it resulted in the arrest of 20 suspects involved in thuggery activities. Dangerous weapons and illicit drugs were also recovered during the operation.

“The recovered items included 19 knives, three pointed irons, one hand saw, a pair of scissors, two clubs, six parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 12 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, and 31 sachets of diazepam,” the statement added.

The command commended the people of Kano State for their support and cooperation, urging continued vigilance and the prompt reporting of suspicious activities.

“We appreciate the good people of Kano State for their cooperation during the operation. The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and urges everyone to remain vigilant,” SP Kiyawa added.

The statement further highlighted the command’s community-centred approach to policing.

It noted the ongoing initiatives such as Community Policing Forums, Neighborhood Watch Programs, and Youth Engagement Programs.

“These initiatives aim to foster collaboration between the police and residents to prevent crime and enhance safety,” the statement reads.

“The feedback we receive from community leaders and residents has been invaluable in shaping our strategies. Together, we can create a safer Kano State,” he said.
