South Africa has pushed back against President Donald Trump’s claim that the country will not be invited to the 2026 G20 Summit in Florida, with President Cyril Ramaphosa describing the remarks as “regrettable.”
The statement follows President Trump’s post alleging that South Africa failed to hand over the G20 presidency to a US Embassy representative during last week’s Johannesburg summit.
He further announced that, as a result, South Africa would not receive an invitation to the 2026 G20 gathering in Miami.
In response, Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Pretoria recognises that relations with Washington are unlikely to undergo a major reset at this stage, but South Africa will continue engaging other G20 members on ongoing multilateral work.
He added that should any visa obstacles emerge, South Africa would proceed with its commitments through alternative partnerships within the bloc.
Although the United States did not attend the Johannesburg meeting, the G20 presidency instruments were formally transferred to a US Embassy official at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
President Trump has previously made allegations of “white genocide” in South Africa—claims the South African government continues to dismiss as unsubstantiated.
South Africa maintains that its G20 participation remains on course and that all official processes relating to the presidency handover were completed according to protocol.
