Disability Inclusion Conference, ‘AbilityX 1.0’, Holds in Lagos

Nigeria’s premier Disability Inclusion Conference, ‘AbilityX 1.0’, is set to take place in Lagos on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, as part of activities marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. 

The event, themed ‘The Future of Disability Inclusion in Nigeria’, is convened by Project Enable Africa (PEA) in partnership with Jobberman Nigeria and will be held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.

Speaking through a statement, Olalekan Owonikoko, Executive Director of Project Enable Africa, described the conference as a major shift from advocacy to actionable solutions.

He said, “AbilityX seeks to ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included but also play active roles in shaping Africa’s inclusive future.”

According to him, “the conference will explore the intersection of disability, data, technology, and the future of work, while showcasing innovative policies, inclusive digital tools, and emerging assistive technologies.

“AbilityX 1.0 will bring together leading voices from across a range of sectors to examine critical issues affecting long-term disability inclusion, including financial inclusion, employability, entrepreneurship, healthcare, hospitality, inclusive media, and data-driven policymaking. 

“Some of the confirmed speakers include Dr Kola Olugbodi, CEO of Background Check International; Temi Dalley, Group Executive in charge of Human Capital and Corporate Services at Sterling Financial Holdings Company, and Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Sport.

“Others include Oluseun Onigbinde, CEO of BudgiT; Cosmas Okoli, head of Mobility Aid and Appliances Research and Development Centre (MAARDEC); Dipo Adesida, Chief Operating Officer of Verdant Zeal Group; Kingsley Ezeocha, Head of Sales and Marketing at Hygeia; Dolapo Agbede, Inclusion and DEI Expert; and Tosin Ishola, Chief Operating Officer of Lafiami, among other distinguished leaders.”

Also speaking, Jobberman Nigeria Head of Programmes, Olamide Adeyeye, noted that its “partnership with Project Enable Africa reflects its commitment to promoting inclusive economic growth and enabling persons with disabilities to thrive in a rapidly evolving labour market. 

“The collaboration aims to reimagine the future of work for marginalised populations and reinforce opportunities for persons with disabilities.”

The AbilityX Conference is expected to emerge as a leading platform for strengthening disability leadership, fostering sustainable partnerships, and positioning Nigeria as a pioneer in disability-inclusive innovation. 

The event will also feature the AbilityX Impact Award, which celebrates individuals and organisations breaking barriers and advancing disability inclusion across various sectors.

    Barely one month after ordering the release and compensation of one Abuja-based business woman, Mrs. Chineze Ozoadibe, the Director General, Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of one Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, arrested in July 2022, for his alleged involvement in the activities of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). 

    The DG also awarded Nwafor, who hails from Isuikwuato LGA of Abia state, N5 million as compensation for the wrongful arrest and free medicare.

    Credible security sources revealed that detailed investigation conducted by personnel of the Service exonerated Nwafor. 

    The source noted that the release and compensation are in line with the Director General’s directive that all the cases he inherited be reviewed to ensure due process and prompt dispensation of justice.

    “The DG directed his investigation officers to conduct detailed review of all pending cases and they have been dutifully doing that. Nwafor’s case is one of such cases’,” the source offered. 

    “The gesture, one of the several by the DG, is a testament to his resolve to comply with the rule of law and adherence to the service standard operating procedure,” he stated, adding, three Abia men, Udemba, Onyedikachi and Eze, suspected of belongings to IPOB, were equally released. 

    “Mr Tosin Ajayi acknowledges that as humans, we sometimes make mistakes. He also believes that when such mistakes are made, the right thing is to make amends. That is why he has established a culture of accountability and humanly makes efforts to remedy the mistakes of the Agency,” added the source. 

    “Remember he paid N20 million as compensation to one Jos- based businessman who was erroneously shot on the leg in the course of a security operation in 2016. Even when the court awarded N10 million in damages against the DSS, the agency refused to pay until Ajayi became DG. He doubled the money. 

    “Nwafor isn’t the first Igbo to be released and compensated under similar circumstances. Some months ago, the DG ordered the release of three young men wrongfully detained for belonging to IPOB. 

    “Last month, he paid N10 million as compensation to the Abuja-based Igbo businesswoman arrested by a sister security agency for alleged illegal oil bunkering. The DG added N10 million for five others to share, explained the source, adding, “this has become the trend since the new DSS leadership.”

    President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, Monday unveiled Nigeria’s Counter-Terrorism Strategic Plan 2025–2030, declaring it a decisive turning point in the country’s battle against terrorism and violent extremism.

    The document was produced by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

    It outlines Nigeria’s new security vision for the next five years. 

    Speaking at the launch, Akpabio, in a statement by his Media Office, described the plan as “a defining moment in our nation’s journey”, stressing that Nigeria must secure its people to unlock its full development potential.

    He said the plan represents a bold response to a generational question: how to secure the nation, safeguard citizens and place Nigeria firmly on the path of peace, growth and stability.

    He said: “The Strategic Plan 2025–2030 answers this question with vision, discipline and ambition. 

    ‘“It offers a framework for transforming our institutions, modernising our security architecture, strengthening national resilience and expanding partnerships across government, industry, civil society and the international community.”

    Akpabio warned that insecurity continues to erode the foundations of national development, citing investors pulling out, schools shutting down, farmers fleeing their fields and young people losing hope. 

    He said this reality makes a forward-looking, implementation-driven strategy crucial.

    He emphasised the legislature’s central role in strengthening security, noting that the 10th National Assembly had passed far-reaching laws on defence, policing, intelligence coordination, cybersecurity and counter-terrorism. 

    Parliament, he said, had also improved agency mandates, enhanced inter-agency synergy and prioritised the welfare of security personnel.

    But he cautioned that legislation alone is insufficient.

    “We must invest in people, technology, training and strategic partnerships,” he said. “We must replace short-term firefighting with long-term planning. That is why this Strategic Plan matters,  because it translates intent into action and action into measurable results.”

    Akpabio noted that security cannot be achieved by government alone, insisting it requires the commitment of citizens, communities, traditional institutions, the private sector and international partners. 

    The new plan, he noted, stands out because it adopts a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach.

    National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, represented by the Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, said the strategy is the product of extensive research and inter-agency collaboration involving ministries, security institutions, academia, civil society groups and global partners.

    He said the vision of the NCTC is to establish itself as a regional centre of excellence for counter-terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism in West Africa and the Sahel.

    The NSA added that the plan provides a unified, coordinated and measurable framework for tackling emerging threats and ensuring that Nigeria strengthens its leadership in regional security cooperation.
