US lifts 15% cocoa tariff — Ghana set to gain $60m annually

Ghana is set to benefit from a major policy shift by the United States following the reversal of a 15% tariff previously imposed on cocoa and selected agricultural exports under the Trump administration.

According to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, US officials have formally notified the Government of Ghana that the tariff rescission took effect on 13 November 2025 through a new Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump.

The reversal covers Ghana’s cocoa beans—one of the country’s top export commodities—as well as several other agricultural products, including cashew nut, avocado, banana, mango, orange, lime, plantain, pineapple, guava, coconut, ginger and assorted peppers.

Ablakwa noted that with Ghana exporting an average of 78,000 metric tonnes of cocoa beans to the US annually, and with global prices currently around US$5,300 per metric tonne, the tariff removal positions Ghana to earn an additional US$60 million (GHS 667 million) each year.

He described the development as a significant boost, especially as the US remains the world’s largest importer of chocolate and cocoa-related products.

The tariff hike stemmed from a 31 July 2025 executive order by President Trump, which imposed a 15% reciprocal levy on several countries, including Ghana.
