Kaduna Signs MoU With Core International on Mining At G20 Summit

On the sidelines of the historic G20 Summit, the first ever held in Africa, the Kaduna State Government has formalised a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with international advisory firm, Core International, during an event hosted by the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC). 

The agreement tasks Core International and the Kaduna Mining Development Company (KMDC) with an aggressive mandate: to finalize the Fund’s structure and secure anchor capital, enabling it to be fully operational and ready to deploy by the end of Q1 2026.

The Fund addresses the most significant hurdle in Nigerian mining: the scarcity of early-stage, risk-tolerant funding. 

The Fund is explicitly private sector-driven, designed to co-finance drilling and initial project preparation for minerals essential to the global energy transition, specifically lithium, rare earth elements (REEs), and gold found within the state.

The Managing Director, KMDC, Mr. Shuaibu Kabir Bello, stated that the decision to sign the MoU in Johannesburg strategically links Kaduna’s resource ambition to the G20’s agenda on clean energy transition and sustainable development in the Global South.

This Fund, Bello said, is the mechanism that transitions Kaduna from having potential to realizing value, noting that it has been tasked by Governor Uba Sani to build a modern and transparent mining sector. 

On his part, the Managing Partner of Core International, Suleiman Zakari, opined that the company’s commitment of anchor capital through the Fund tells the world, “we are not just seeking investors; we are strategic partners who have done the groundwork, provided the data, and are ready to share the exploration risk. 

“This is the new investment standard for Nigeria”.

Zakari, in a statement on Sunday, added: “Signing this agreement in Johannesburg, where the world’s largest economies are focused on securing critical mineral supply chains, is a clear statement.

“Our role is to construct a Fund that meets global standards, guaranteeing that the state’s anchor capital, alongside that of private co-investors, is deployed transparently and effectively to de-risk exploration assets. 

“This is a secure bridge for global capital into Kaduna. The Fund’s launch finalizes Governor Uba Sani’s comprehensive State Exploration Acceleration Programme. 

“The state is not simply seeking investment; it is presenting a fully de-risked and integrated investment ecosystem. 

“By providing the data, infrastructure and now a co-financing vehicle, Kaduna is positioned as the most exploration-ready and investment-attractive jurisdiction in Nigeria.”

    At least fifty students of the St Mary’s Private Primary and Secondary school in Papiri town of Agwara local government area of Niger state kidnapped last week have escaped from the den of their abductors.
    ThISDAY learnt that 10 of the escaped students are girls, going by the names given on the manifest released by the school on Sunday.
    Earlier, 11 students escaped from the kidnappers thereby bringing the number of those that have regained their freedom to 66.
    However, there has been no report of any of the kidnapped teachers escaping.

    The Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, Most. Reverend Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, who is also the Proprietor of the school as well as the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, gave the update in a statement in Minna on Sunday.
    Most Reverend Yohanna also said that 141 students of the school initially feared to have been abducted were not kidnapped.
    The 61 students and the 141 he said have reunited with their parents.
    Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago visited the Emirate headquarters of the area where the incident took place on Saturday and blamed the incident on “informants.”
    UMCA”s Reverend Yohanna Yakubu whose daughter is among those kidnapped pleaded with Governor Bago “to help rescue my daughter.”

    The Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, has called on northern political, traditional and civic leaders to take full advantage of President Bola Tinubu’s consistent support for the region and the significant rise in subnational revenues to confront the escalating security challenges facing the north.

    He spoke at the 25th anniversary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna.

    Barau said the north currently occupies “a position of unique political advantage” owing to what he described as President Tinubu’s unwavering receptiveness to northern concerns and requests.

    According to him, the president has repeatedly demonstrated commitment to the region through interventions in security, agriculture, education and rapid responses to emergencies across the north.

    Barau said: “We have never taken any request tied to the north to him without receiving support. Whatever we take to him in terms of our needs, he will definitely deliver.”

    The Deputy Senate President, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, urged northern governors, federal lawmakers and regional stakeholders to harness this goodwill to design and implement coordinated security strategies. 

    He said the region cannot afford fragmented responses when the political atmosphere and fiscal inflows are favourable.

    He drew attention to the rising revenues now flowing to state governments, arguing that enhanced fiscal capacity must translate into deliberate investment in security architecture, intelligence networks and local policing efforts.

    According to him, “The National Assembly is ready to support and co-fund initiatives that will strengthen security and drive development across the region.”

    He cited the South-west as an example, saying the establishment of the Amotekun Corps had contributed significantly to stabilising the zone and making it one of the safest parts of the country. 

    He insisted that the north could replicate such success if its leaders commit to unified action.

    “Let our leaders come together. The governors, lawmakers, stakeholders. Let us sit together and work on finding solutions to our problems,” he said.

    Barau dismissed the dire projections presented at the event by Professor Jibrin Ibrahim in a trend analysis titled ‘Arewa in the Next 25 Years’.

    He argued that pessimistic forecasts would not materialise where there is collective resolve.

    “As long as we put our heads together, we shall take our region forward and help the country towards prosperity. This is doable,” he said.

    He also tasked the ACF with stepping up its convening power by regularly bringing northern governors, federal legislators and security experts into the same room. 

    Barau noted that several past meetings were held without the involvement of top federal lawmakers who could influence budgetary outcomes.

    He said: “Invite us. We can influence funding. We can give weight to these initiatives.”

    Congratulating the ACF on its Silver Jubilee, Barau said the Forum’s next phase must focus on mobilising unity and sharpening regional strategies.

    He stressed the need to align fully with a president who, according to him, has shown firm commitment to the north’s development and aspirations.
