France Honours Fallen Heroes, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace

Michael Olugbode in Abuja

France has reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, and multilateral cooperation as the French Embassy in Abuja joined the world to commemorate Armistice Day, marking 107 years since the end of the First World War.

The solemn ceremony, held in Abuja, recognised the sacrifices of French soldiers and all who died for the Republic — not only during the First World War but also in other conflicts around the world — in defence of liberty, democracy, and human dignity.

The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, who led the ceremony, said it was a solemn reminder of the cost of peace and the duty of nations to preserve it.

He praised the bravery of soldiers who fought for the Republic, saying their sacrifices embody the very spirit of France — courage, honour, and service to humanity.

He stated that: “France remembers not only those who fell on the fields of Europe but also those who fought and died in Africa, Asia, and beyond.”

Fonbaustier also reaffirmed France’s strong partnership with Nigeria and its continued commitment to multilateral cooperation, peacekeeping, and humanitarian support in Africa and worldwide. He noted that both nations share a vision of stability and mutual respect built on dialogue and democratic values. “France stands with Nigeria and all peace-loving nations in defending the ideals of freedom and human dignity,” he added.

Speaking at the event, the Defence Attaché of France to Nigeria, Colonel Stéphane Useo, stated that the commemoration represents more than mere remembrance; it reflects France’s enduring commitment to promoting peace and upholding shared human values. He said, “Every year, generations gather before the monuments of our towns and villages, united in remembrance and strengthened in our shared purpose — to build a world where liberty, security, and dignity are guaranteed for all.”

Useo paid tribute to the courage and selflessness of French soldiers through the ages, noting that their sacrifices continue to define the strength and values of the French Republic. He also shared a personal reflection, revealing that members of his own family were among those who experienced the horrors of war.

“For my family, as for many French families, war was not distant history — it was lived experience. It taught us that freedom is never free, and that peace must always be defended,” he said.

He further highlighted the symbolism of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe and the Bleuet de France, the blue cornflower that has represented solidarity with veterans since 1925. The Defence Attaché described the flower as “a small but powerful emblem of compassion, resilience, and unity.”

The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths and a moment of silence at the embassy’s memorial plaque, as France renewed its message that remembrance is not only about honouring the past but also about sustaining the collective resolve to secure a peaceful and united future.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by officials of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD), led by its founder, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, an internationally renowned diplomat who rose to the position of Under- Secretary General, Political Affairs of the United Nations, and later served as Chief of Staff to the immediate past President of Nigeria, the late Muhammadu Buhari, the Governor said though the country has been through a lot of challenges, President Tinubu is working tirelessly to address them.

“As a patriot, I believe we need to support the President to continue his bold and audacious reforms which are already showing signs of success across sectors in our nation,” he said.

Governor Eno appreciated Prof Gambari for showing interest in his administration’s ARISE Agenda.

He noted that Akwa Ibom State has been working to deepen peace and security, adding that the State was developing it’s tourism assets including the ARISE Palm Resort, smart Airport, hotels and other assets geared towards advancing its aspiration of becoming a major player in tourism within the Gulf of Guinea.

“In all of these, we need strong human capacity and development because like you rightly identified, the need for our people taking ownership and aligning themselves to the core values of our Arise Agenda is very important. So there is a need for synergy between the civil service and public service. I believe we can work very closely to have training for our workers,” he added.

He directed the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah and the Executive Assistant/Chief Delivery Advisor, Mr. Aniefiok Johnson to work out modalities for synergy in the necessary areas.

The Governor commended Prof. Gambari for his service stating that his life has been a story of high accomplishments, from his role as an academic, to being Nigeria’s Minister for External Affairs, now

Earlier in his address, Prof Gambari thanked the Governor for the warm reception and unique hospitality and ambience of the State.

He commended Governor Eno for his enormous strides and positive impact recorded since he mounted the saddle of leadership of the state, a little over two years ago.

He highlighted the roles of the organization to include human capacity trainings for both senior management staff and the permanent secretaries at the Federal and State Civil Service across states in Nigeria.

Our Infrastructure Will Stand the Test of Time, Says Abiodun

Our Infrastructure Will Stand the Test of Time, Says Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that will stand the test of time.

Speaking during the unveiling of the newly remodelled Executive Council Chambers at the Governor’s Office, Olusegun Osoba, the governor lamented the dilapidated condition of the edifice before its renovation, describing it as “an embarrassment.”

According to him, the decision to remodel rather than construct a new Governor’s Office was deliberate.

“This office was in total decay and an embarrassment. We chose not to build another Governor’s Office but to remodel the existing one. Investors will not be in doubt of our seriousness when they see new things in the state,” he said.

The remodelled chambers is equipped with modern hi-tech facilities, including a state-of-the-art public address system, individual monitors displaying meeting agendas and deliberations, three large television screens for live discussions, modern executive chairs, and enhanced lighting to create the right ambience for serious state business.

Governor Abiodun noted that the project is part of the administration’s broader regeneration agenda, which also includes the facelift of major landmarks such as the Ibara Government Reservation Area (GRA).

He added that the regeneration efforts align with the state’s Urban Renewal Programme and the vision to deliver good governance while creating an enabling environment for long-term development.

The governor highlighted his administration’s strides in infrastructure, security, health, education, and housing—key pillars of the ISEYA mantra—and emphasised that the new Executive Council Chambers would provide a conducive environment for strategic thinking and decision-making for the benefit of the people.

He commended members of the State Executive Council for their contributions to the administration’s achievements, noting that their ideas and dedication were instrumental to the progress recorded.

Abiodun also paid glowing tribute to Chief Olusegun Osoba, describing him as an enigma, foremost politician, astute administrator, and a founding father whose efforts helped open up rural communities for grassroots development. He said his administration continues to benefit from Chief Osoba’s wealth of experience.

In his remarks, Chief Osoba applauded the governor for the ongoing transformation across the state. He expressed delight at the new look of the Ibara GRA—once a slum but now a pride to the state and Egbaland.

He also commended the governor for delivering a world-class Executive Council Chambers comparable to any of its kind globally.

The unveiling adds to the list of major urban renewal achievements under the Abiodun administration. The government previously remodelled the MKO Abiola Stadium into a world-class sports arena—host of the best-rated National Sports Festival and a venue for international events. The Cultural Centre has also undergone a similar transformation.

Abiodun reiterated his commitment to rebranding Ogun State through sustained urban renewal efforts aimed at birthing a modern, forward-looking state.
