The Government of Ghana has announced that a state funeral will be held for the late former First Lady, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, on Friday, 28 November 2025, at the Independence Square in Accra.
The announcement, issued by the Ministry of Government Communications and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, said the ceremony will be held under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama.
According to the statement, the state funeral is in recognition of Mrs. Rawlings’ invaluable contributions to the advancement of women’s and children’s rights, and her significant role in Ghana’s national development.
Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001. She was the founder and leader of the 31st December Women’s Movement, an organisation credited with championing women’s empowerment, education, and health initiatives across the country.
Her advocacy for women’s inclusion in leadership and social development earned her both national and international recognition. Mrs. Rawlings was widely regarded as a pioneering figure in Ghana’s women’s rights movement and a major influence in the country’s democratic evolution.
The government said the state funeral will honour her legacy of public service and dedication to the welfare of women and children, as well as her decades-long commitment to nation-building.
Details of the funeral programme are expected to be released by the Presidency in the coming days.
