NPP accuses Mahama government of weaponising state institutions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the Mahama-led administration of using state institutions to intimidate political opponents and weaken Ghana’s democratic institutions.

At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said recent actions by security agencies and the judiciary point to what he described as a deliberate attempt to silence dissenting voices.

He alleged that several members of the opposition party had faced politically motivated arrests and prolonged detentions in violation of their constitutional rights.

“State security agencies continue to flout with impunity the Constitution of Ghana, particularly Article 14 on the grant of bail to persons arrested or detained,” Kodua said. “Under this John Mahama administration, such persons are rather presumed guilty until they prove their innocence.”

The NPP cited the arrests of some of its senior members, including Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), Charles Adu Boahen, and Osei Assibey Antwi, as examples of politically targeted actions.

Kodua also criticised what he called “judicial intimidation,” linking it to the removal of former Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo, which he claimed had instilled fear among judges.

“Judges now fear to dispense justice according to the law because they worry, they may suffer the same fate as Justice Torkonoo,” he said.

The NPP further accused Attorney General Dominic Ayine of “abuse of prosecutorial discretion,” claiming he had discontinued cases involving persons affiliated with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) while pursuing politically charged prosecutions against NPP members.

“Never in the history of this country have we seen such blatant abuse of prosecutorial discretion. Dominic Ayine is more interested in cutting deals with accused persons to use them as witnesses against former NPP appointees,” Kodua stated.

The party also expressed concern over what it described as the “return of the culture of silence,” pointing to increasing reports of harassment of journalists and social media users critical of government.

Kodua reaffirmed the NPP’s resolve to resist any attempt to erode democratic freedoms and said the party would “stand firm” in defence of the rule of law.
