President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to advancing media freedom and protecting information integrity, pledging stronger international cooperation to safeguard independent journalism and democratic values.
Speaking at the closing session of the 2025 Paris Peace Forum on Information Integrity and Independent Media, President Mahama announced that Ghana is now a full member of the Partnership for Information and Democracy and will also support the International Fund for Public Interest Media — two key global initiatives aimed at promoting credible, ethical, and independent journalism.
He said the decision reflects Ghana’s dedication to upholding press freedom, strengthening democratic governance, and ensuring that the country continues to serve as a continental model for media development and accountability.
“Ghana is joining the Partnership for Information and Democracy as a full member and will support the International Fund for Public Interest Media,” President Mahama stated. “This is yet another indication that Ghana remains steadfast in advancing the frontiers of freedom, upholding the rule of law, and serving as a model nation in promoting democracy and good governance.”
The President’s remarks followed a high-level discussion on the future of information integrity and global democracy, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders. The session underscored the growing threat of misinformation, disinformation, and the need for collective global action to strengthen trust in media institutions.
President Mahama noted that Ghana’s leadership in media freedom on the African continent demonstrates the country’s progress in creating an environment where journalists can operate freely and independently.
“We must continue to support journalists and institutions that stand for integrity and accountability, demand transparency and ethical responsibility from digital and AI platforms and strengthen international cooperation to protect information as a shared global asset,” he said.
The Paris Peace Forum, now in its eighth edition, brought together heads of state, international organisations, and civil society actors to explore practical solutions for safeguarding democracy and truth in an era of rapid digital transformation and misinformation.
