Teachers at Armed Forces SHTS declare headmaster persona non grata over assault on female colleague

Teachers at the Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (AFSHTS) in Kumasi have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to act on what they describe as “continued intimidation and abuse of authority” at the school, following the alleged assault of a female teacher by military police officers.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, 29 October 2025, the teachers condemned what they called a “brutal and dehumanising” attack on Madam Rita, a teacher at the school.

The incident reportedly occurred when two-armed Military Police officers, accompanied by staff allegedly loyal to the ousted headmaster, Colonel Godwin Agbekey, stormed the campus to compel the teacher to issue a statement in support of his reinstatement.

“This brazen act, which took place in full view of colleagues and management, is unwarranted, dehumanising, and criminal,” the teachers said in a joint statement signed by members of the major teacher unions — NAGRAT, GNAT, CCT, and TEWU.

The statement alleged that Col. Agbekey, though removed from office, continues to “wield the Military Police as instruments of harassment” against teachers who challenge his authority. The teachers say accommodation on campus has been “weaponised,” with threats of eviction being used to silence dissenting voices.

“Resident teachers suffer severe intimidation and threats of eviction, often within 48 hours to seven days,” the statement claimed. “These acts have created fear, insecurity, and mistrust, eroding professionalism within the school.”

The staff have since declared the headmaster persona non grata, calling for his immediate removal and demanding a public response from the Chief of Defence Staff and the Ghana Education Service within 48 hours.

Education and defence authorities have yet to respond publicly to the allegations. However, the teachers have warned that any further acts of harassment “will be met with lawful resistance.”

Their statement concluded: “We reaffirm our commitment to professionalism, peace, and quality education, but we will not compromise our safety, dignity, or integrity.”
