The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested five suspects for their alleged involvement in a human trafficking and cybercrime syndicate.
The suspects were arrested at Adom Estates, Community 25, in Tema, in an intelligence-led operation.
A police press release named the suspects as Joel Nosa, Collins Rotimi, Shadrack Lulu, Austin Amahuaro and John Uloko.
Preliminary investigations, the police say, indicate that the suspects operated a network which lured and transported young men and women from Nigeria to Ghana.
The victims, aged between 18 and 26, were promised employment and educational opportunities. However, on arrival in Ghana, they were forced to engage in online romance scams and other illegal activities.
Police retrieved 77 laptops, 38 mobile phones, two vehicles, three television sets and other internet-enabled devices believed to have been used to carry out the crimes.
The 57 rescued victims are receiving care and support, while the suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with the investigation. The retrieved items are being held for forensic examination.
The Ghana Police Service is cautioning the public, particularly young people, to be vigilant about offers of employment or education that appear too good to be true.
