Osun State Police Command has urged members of the public, especially those in the scrap and waste business, to remain vigilant and work closely with Police to prevent explosive-related incidents.

The Commander of Explosive Ordinance Disposal, base 16 Osogbo, SP Godwin Ogigha gave this advice during an awareness and sensitisation campaign for members of the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employee of Nigeria, NASWDEN, Osun State Chapter.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the campaign which was facilitated by the Explosive Ordinance Disposal, EOD, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear, CBRN, unit of the command aimed to promote public safety through education on the identification, risks, and safe handling of explosive related materials.

Speaking at the event, SP Ogigha also stated that the Police Command under the leadership of CP Ibrahim Gotan, remained committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the state.

The Commander of the EOD Base 16 Osogbo, SP Godwin Ogigha, reaffirmed the commitment of the Osun State Police Command to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

He said, “The Command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, will continue to work towards ensuring a safe environment for all residents.

“We urge members of the public, especially those in the scrap and waste business, to remain vigilant and report suspicious objects or activities promptly.”

SP Ogigha commended the participants for their cooperation and attentiveness during the training, urging them to apply the knowledge gained to promote workplace safety.

The statement disclosed that the event featured practical demonstrations and interactive discussions with participants on how to recognise potential explosive ordnance and how to respond safely to prevent casualties.

Representatives of NASWDEN expressed appreciation to the Police Command for the initiative and pledged their readiness to collaborate with security agencies in maintaining public safety.

They stated, “We will work closely with the Police and other stakeholders to ensure that our members adhere to safety procedures and report any suspicious findings without hesitation.”

Participants were also educated on the dangers of mishandling suspicious objects and the importance of adhering strictly to safety protocols while carrying out their daily work.

During the session, the police emphasised the need for cooperation between law enforcement agencies and members of the scrap and waste industry to prevent incidents involving explosives.

The sensitisation campaign forms part of the Osun Police Command’s broader strategy to strengthen community engagement and prevent avoidable accidents involving explosive materials.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, in the statement, reaffirmed that the command will continue to partner with relevant organisations and communities to advance safety awareness across the state.
