Wa:Police arrest two suspected serial killers, one confesses to murdering 15 people

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested two men believed to be connected to a string of serial murders that have terrorised residents in the Wa Municipality and parts of the Savannah Region since 2021.

One of the suspects, 30-year-old Sherif Abdulai, reportedly confessed during interrogation that he had murdered 15 people in the Wa Municipality alone over the past four years.

He was arrested at Adabiya, a suburb of Wa, after sustained intelligence-led operations by police.

His arrest followed the earlier capture of 25-year-old Mahamuda Lamin, who is being held in connection with the recent killing of a night watchman, Mr Yahaya Issah, at Dobile near the Wa New Market.

Upper West Regional Police Commander, ACP Francis Yiribarie, told the media that Sherif Abdulai, an ex-convict, admitted to targeting watchmen and vulnerable individuals, mostly at night.

“During questioning, the suspect confessed to killing fifteen people in Wa Municipality since 2021,” ACP Yiribarie disclosed.

“He also admitted to killing three mad men and two watchmen at Bole, one madman in Banda Nkwanta, and a madwoman in Bamboi. He carries his victims on his shoulder and buries them secretly in nearby bushes.”

Police say items retrieved from Abdulai included belongings believed to be those of the late Yahaya Issah — a Villoan keypad phone and a solar-powered portable radio. A further search near his hideout by the Wa Airstrip uncovered a specially-edged cutlass, a bicycle, and a sack containing meat, suspected to be linked to the victims.

ACP Yiribarie confirmed that forensic tests are underway on the recovered items. The second suspect, Mahamuda Lamin, has been remanded by the Wa Magistrate Court and is expected to reappear on 21 October 2025.

He commended members of the public for their support and information, and acknowledged the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for what he described as “firm leadership” throughout the investigation.

“I wish to assure residents that the Police remain resolute in our commitment to rid our society of criminal elements and ensure justice for families affected by these crimes,” he said.

The development has brought some relief to residents, who have lived in fear following multiple unsolved killings of night watchmen in the area over recent years. Police say investigations will continue to determine if others are connected to the killings.
