Wontumi to face trial over illegal mining allegations on 6 October

Attorney General Dominic Ayine has stated that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti regional chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, will be prosecuted on Monday, 6 October, for his alleged involvement in illegal mining.

Ayine told a gathering of civil society organisations in Accra on Friday that Wontumi will stand trial alongside Akonta Mining Limited and five others.

The Attorney General explained that the case had stalled under the previous administration because key police dockets were “concealed,” adding that his office only received them two months ago.

“If he does not come on Monday, I am going to order his arrest so that he is brought to Accra and then we can start the prosecution,” Ayine cautioned.

Investigators accuse Akonta Mining of operating unlawfully in the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in western Ghana. The company was authorised to mine off-reserve, but its licence was revoked in April after then lands minister Armah-Kofi Buah confirmed the encroachment. The firm has consistently denied wrongdoing.
