ECOWAS President calls for stronger global partnerships at UN summit

The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, has urged world leaders to prioritise peace, stability and inclusive growth as foundations for global development.

He made the call at the inaugural Biennial Summit for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Global Economy, held on 24 September 2025 on the margins of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In his address, Dr Touray stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace and stability, underscoring the importance of predictable funding for African peace support operations.

He further highlighted the role of regional economic communities in driving integration and growth, and called for stronger institutions, greater mobilisation of domestic resources, deeper private sector involvement and innovative financing as pathways to resilience.

Through these measures, he noted, Africa can build inclusive economies capable of withstanding global shocks while advancing the well-being of its people.

ECOWAS, he added, remains committed to contributing to strong global partnerships and promoting a people-centred international agenda.
