Hot SourceKano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has released ₦5.6bn to settle severance and gratuity payments owed to 1,198 former councillors who served between 2018 and 2020 under ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The package also covered accommodation and leave allowances.
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, this is the second phase of payments for liabilities left behind by the previous administration.
In May 2025, the governor had paid ₦1.8bn to 903 former councillors in the first phase.
Speaking at the disbursement ceremony held at Coronation Hall, Governor Yusuf said his government inherited a total backlog of ₦15.6bn.
He promised that the outstanding ₦8.2bn for 1,371 more beneficiaries would be cleared by November.
The governor explained that the move was not just about money but about fairness, accountability, and restoring dignity to those who served at the grassroots.
He also urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely to support their families and communities.
The event was filled with excitement as some councillors received payment alerts instantly at the venue.
