Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is trading words with the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, over the timing of the party’s presidential primaries and recent public comments.

In a statement dated 28 September 2025, Wontumi rejected claims that his public engagements undermined the party’s National Council. He said he never mentioned the Council in his discussions with supporters and that his statements can be verified from videos shared online.

“My attention has been drawn to a statement issued by the General Secretary… I have never dragged in the name of our National Council and that is easily verifiable from videos shared online,” he said.

Wontumi explained that his comments were only about the NPP’s history and how Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia could help the party win the 2028 elections. He accused Kodua Frimpong of “falling for propaganda” and failing to contact him for clarification before making his statement.

The NPP national leadership, in a separate release signed by Kodua Frimpong on the same day, asked party members and the public to ignore pronouncements by Wontumi and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye.

The statement said no individual “irrespective of rank or position, has a monopoly or unilateral control over the compilation of polling station albums,” adding that the process will follow strict procedures to ensure fairness and integrity.

Kodua Frimpong also rejected claims that the decision to hold the presidential primaries on 31 January 2026 was meant to favour any aspirant, saying the National Council took the decision in the party’s overall interest.

“The decision to hold an early congress is intended solely to provide the party with sufficient time and strategic advantage to reorganise, reposition, and recapture power in 2028,” the statement added.
