The Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network, CJAN, has appealed to the Federal Government and the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to prioritise the provision of decent and safe housing for corps members across the country.

In a statement released on Friday, the Managing Director of CJAN, Taiwo Ajayi, said the wellbeing of corps members must remain a central focus of the NYSC scheme.

He noted that poor housing conditions continue to be one of the most pressing challenges faced by young Nigerians serving in remote or underdeveloped communities.

According to Ajayi, reports from several service states have shown that many corps members are forced to secure accommodation independently, with some residing in overcrowded apartments, rundown buildings, or unsafe environments.

“Corps members are national assets who dedicate a year of their lives to serve Nigeria.

“It is the responsibility of both the NYSC and the Federal Government to ensure that they are provided with decent accommodation, water, electricity, and other basic amenities,” he said.

He added that denying corps members access to adequate housing amounts to neglecting their welfare and undermining the purpose of the national service scheme.

Ajayi called on the Federal Government to adopt a structured national policy that guarantees standardised corps members’ housing across all states of the federation.

He suggested that the NYSC could partner with host communities, local governments, and private organisations to build or renovate corps lodges in strategic locations.

“The issue of housing should not be left to chance. There must be collaboration between the NYSC, local authorities, and the private sector to provide secure and habitable lodges for every corps member,” he added.

He also urged the NYSC to strengthen its monitoring systems to ensure that schools, hospitals, and other institutions hosting corps members fulfil their accommodation promises.

While acknowledging current economic difficulties, Ajayi stressed that prioritising corps members’ welfare would contribute significantly to national development and youth empowerment.

“Providing suitable housing is not a privilege; it is a right. When corps members feel safe and respected, they are more motivated to serve their host communities effectively,” he added.
