Four taxi drivers arrested, six injured in Kokrobite police clash

Four taxi drivers were arrested and six people injured after an encounter with police officers at Kokrobite, near Accra, during a funeral wake-keeping on Saturday night.

According to eyewitnesses, members of the Kokrobite Taxi Drivers Association were helping to control traffic for a hearse carrying a colleague’s late wife when police officers from the Kokrobite District Command arrived. The officers accused the drivers of blocking the road.

Witnesses say an officer identified only as Sarpong struck several people with sticks as others joined in. A passenger seated in a parked vehicle was also injured.

The arrested drivers include the chairman of the Kokrobite Taxi Drivers Association. They were taken into custody at the Kokrobite District Police Station.

Some drivers allege that officers at the station have previously harassed taxi and motorbike riders.

Journalists who went to the station for comment said they were ordered to leave and were prevented from speaking to the duty officer.

As of Sunday evening, police had not issued an official statement on the incident.
