Z-9 helicopter crash inquiry underway with US expertise on board

The Ministry of Defence has announced the commencement of a full-scale investigation into the recent Z-9 helicopter crash, with a high-powered board formally constituted to lead the process.

The board is chaired by the National Security Coordinator, with membership drawn from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Significantly, the United States is lending technical advice and support to the probe, with investigators from the US Air Force joining the Ghanaian-led team. The Defence Ministry also indicated that other local and international experts may be invited to assist.

Following the 6 August 2025 crash, a preliminary investigation team was swiftly constituted to gather available evidence. Its findings have since been submitted to the newly inaugurated board.

According to the Defence Ministry, the Investigation Board has been mandated to complete its work within 30 days, promising a thorough and credible inquiry.

The acting Minister for Defence, Cassiel Ato Forson, in a statement, underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring full accountability and transparency in unraveling the cause of the crash.
