Hot SourcePresident John Dramani Mahama has appointed former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Prof. Wilberforce Sefakor Dzisah, as Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC).
Prof. Dzisah was sworn in on Thursday, 14 August 2025, alongside members of governing councils of other public universities, at a ceremony in Accra presided over by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.
In his acceptance remarks, Prof. Dzisah expressed gratitude to the President and the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, for the trust and confidence reposed in him and his colleagues. He stated that the appointment carried significant responsibility and pledged to work with fellow council members to advance the institution’s mandate.
“I do not take this honour lightly, but on behalf of my colleague Members of the Council, we appreciate the weight of the responsibility that comes with it,” he said.
Currently a Professor of Communications at the School of Technology and Social Sciences, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Prof. Dzisah described UniMAC as “a unique institution – one that sits at the intersection of creativity, technology, culture, and information.” He stressed the university’s role in preparing future generations of storytellers, journalists, artists, policy thinkers, and innovators, especially at a time of digital disruption and contested truths.
He outlined key priorities for the Governing Council, including addressing infrastructural challenges, promoting cutting-edge research, upholding academic freedom, strengthening financial governance, and ensuring the curriculum is aligned with industry needs and national development goals.
Other areas of focus will include empowering faculty and staff, developing students into ethical and critical thinkers, and preserving Ghanaian culture through arts and media.
“We will lead with integrity, transparency, and vision,” Prof. Dzisah said, calling for unity and support from stakeholders. “Let us work with urgency, unity, and purpose as we embark on this journey together to reset Ghana by adopting bold, creative, resilient, and progressive policies.”
