Hot SourceThe bustling Thursday market at Asukawkaw in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region turned into a blood-soaked scene of horror when a fuel tanker lost control and rammed into traders and shoppers, killing four people and leaving at least 14 others injured.
According to Mark Oduro, Assembly Member for the Asukawkaw Electoral Area, the dead include three women and a one-year-old girl who were among market women selling their wares when tragedy struck.
“It is a very sad day for our community. The victims were market women going about their normal activities when the tanker hit them. We have lost three women and a girl believed to be about one year old. Fourteen others have sustained various injuries,” Oduro said
Eyewitnesses say the fully-loaded tanker, speeding into town, suddenly swerved off the road and tore through the crowd, leaving bodies and mangled goods in its wake. The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities, while the scene was cordoned off as police and emergency services battled to contain the chaos.
The cause of the accident is yet to be confirmed, but the incident has thrown the farming community into deep mourning.
