Addressing journalists in Parliament, the Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Laurette Korkor Asante, condemned the two appointees for allegedly endorsing violent attacks carried out against opposition figures. According to the Minority, their conduct undermines democratic principles and disqualifies them from holding any position of trust within government.
“President Mahama must immediately dismiss Dr Hanna Louisa Bissiw from her position as CEO of the Minerals Development Fund and Malik Basintale from his role as Acting CEO of the Youth Employment Agency,” Asante stated. “Their celebration and justification of violence against opposition figures disqualifies them from holding any public office. This dismissal must happen to demonstrate that the government does not condone political violence.”
The Minority further called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the violence that marred the Ablekuma North electoral rerun. They demanded the swift arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators involved.
“All individuals involved in the Ablekuma North violence must be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The police must provide daily updates on their investigation and arrests. There can be no impunity for those who attack our democratic process,” Asante stressed.
The caucus also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending Ghana’s democracy, the rule of law, and the constitutional order — describing these as the bedrock of the nation’s stability and progress.
“The Minority has made its choice. We stand firmly with democracy, with the rule of law, and with the constitutional order that has served our nation well. We will defend these principles with unwavering determination until justice prevails and democratic governance is restored,” the statement concluded.
The calls come amid growing tension following violent scenes during the Ablekuma North rerun, which have sparked national outrage and raised serious questions about the conduct of political actors and the protection of Ghana’s democratic values.
