Mavis Kumi not contesting Akwatia seat — Eastern Regional NPP clarifies

The Eastern Regional branch of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has categorically denied claims that Mavis Kumi, wife of Ernest Kumi, is vying to contest the party’s parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia constituency.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Regional Communication Directorate described the circulating reports as “baseless and unfounded,” cautioning party faithful and the public against falling for such fabrications.

According to the regional executives, at no point did Mavis Kumi pick up nomination forms or express interest in contesting in Akwatia. The Directorate emphasized that the current narrative appears to be a deliberate attempt to create disunity within the party and sow confusion among delegates and constituents.

“The Eastern Regional NPP wishes to state unequivocally that Mrs. Mavis Kumi has not expressed any intention, either publicly or privately, to contest in the upcoming parliamentary primaries in Akwatia. Any information suggesting otherwise is false and should be disregarded,” the statement read.

The party further urged supporters to rally behind Ernest Kumi, the current parliamentary candidate, and focus on consolidating the party’s strength ahead of the 2024 general elections.

It also called on media outlets and social commentators to verify their information before publication to avoid peddling falsehoods that have the potential to undermine the party’s internal cohesion.

The clarification comes amidst heightened interest in various parliamentary slots across the country, with numerous aspirants jostling to represent the NPP in its strongholds.
