US president, Donald Trump, has condemned his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, after deadly attacks in Kyiv killed at least eight people.

Posting on his Truth Social, Trump claimed the attacks were “not necessary” and “very” badly timed.

He wrote: “Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5,000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!”.

140 drones and 70 missiles were fired into Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, 64 and 48 of which were shot down, according to the Ukraine’s Air Force.

The assault forced Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to cut short his official trip to South Africa.

Weeks of peace negotiations appeared to be coming to a head without an agreement in sight.

Trump had hit out at Zelenskyy, chiding him for refusing to surrender Crimea as part of a possible deal.
