The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Eket Field office, has sealed five filling stations in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State including that of the Chairman, Petroleum Products Monitoring Committee (PPMC), in the state, Mr Godwin Ekpo

The State Coordinator of NMDPRA, Mr. Ikechukwu Eseka who disclosed this to newsmen in Uyo after a two day routine surveillance operations said the filling station of the PPMC was sealed due to non-possession of an operating license and selling of products illegally.

Eseka wondered where the PPMC chairman obtains his products from since he does not have operational license even as he suspected diversion of products.

According to him, “This is the clear case of diversion of products of about 15,000 litres of suspected fuel being sold at his filling station.

“How? from who? and how did he get PMS to sell as the directive of NO LICENSE, NO LOADING depots was still in force.

“His filling station was even selling the diverted product from two pumps.”

Eseka said the other four filling stations were sealed for various infractions, such as under dispensing, poor housekeeping, and modification of station/rebranding without obtaining the necessary approvals from NMDPRA.

The state coordinator noted that the filling stations would remain sealed until they pay necessary fines to the federal government.

The House of Representatives has taken a major step toward the creation of a new state in the South-West, as a bill seeking to establish Ibadan State from the present Oyo State passed its second reading on Thursday.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Abass Adigun, who represents the Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to officially recognise Ibadan as a state.

While leading the debate on the floor of the House, Adigun argued that the bill represents a “monumental step toward equitable development through true federalism and the fulfillment of the long-held aspiration of the people of Ibadan.”

He noted that despite Ibadan’s historical significance as the former capital of the old Western Region, alongside cities like Enugu and Kaduna that have since become states, it remains without such recognition.

According to the lawmaker, Ibadan possesses the required population size, economic capacity, and landmass to merit statehood. He also claimed that a single local government in Ibadan is larger than three combined local governments in Bayelsa State.

His comments, however, drew an immediate objection from Obuku Ofurji, representing the Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, who described the comparison as “irrelevant and disrespectful.”

Adigun later apologised for the remark but insisted that his argument was based on verifiable facts, urging his colleagues to support the bill in the interest of fairness and balanced national development.

Advocacy condemns alleged NAF attack on local gin factory mistaken for illegal refinery

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, YEAC-Nigeria, has condemned the alleged shooting of innocent citizens and destruction of businesses by the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, in Umuebele 3, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The organisation expressed shock over the incident, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

According to reports, personnel of the Air Force stormed the business premises of one Barine Friday, who refines palm wine into local gin, popularly known as “kai-kai,” destroying equipment used for his trade and firing shots before leaving the scene.

It is alleged that NAF personnel carried out the action, thinking the premises is being used to illegally refine crude oil.

Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, said in a statement on Wednesday that the report was brought to the organisation’s attention by members of its Youth Volunteers Network under the “One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta.”

Fyneface described the incident as reminiscent of a recent bombing in Tai Local Government Area, where the Air Force allegedly destroyed a palm oil mill after mistaking it for an illegal crude oil refinery.

He lamented that despite the earlier mistake, the Nigerian Air Force failed to exercise due caution in this latest operation, noting that residents of Umuebele 3 are predominantly farmers and artisans who depend on palm wine tapping, farming, and local gin production for their livelihoods.

While preliminary findings indicate that no lives were lost, YEAC-Nigeria said the attack had caused significant destruction to the economic activities of the affected residents.

He said, “It is disheartening to note that despite this previous mistake, the Nigerian Air Force failed to exercise caution and due diligence in this latest incident.

“The people of Umuebele 3, Etche Local Government Area and visitors resident in the area are predominantly farmers and artisans who depend on farming, palm wine tapping and local gin production among others for their livelihoods.

“The actions of the Nigerian Air Force have not only caused harm to these innocent citizens but have also destroyed their means of survival, although no life was allegedly lost, pending further investigations and visits to the area for assessment of damages.”

The organisation called for a thorough investigation and an immediate assessment of the destruction caused.

It also demanded that the Nigerian Air Force conduct an on-site inspection, adequately compensate the victims, and refrain from carrying out further bombings in the Niger Delta without proper intelligence and verification.

YEAC-Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with the Umuebele 3 community and pledged to continue advocating for their rights and protection.

Egbetokun said the enforcement was temporarily halted to consider the interests of Nigerians and in deference to the NBA, pending the outcome of a Motion on Notice scheduled for 16th October 2025 at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.

The IGP made this known when he received a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

DAILY POST reports that the meeting focused on the temporary suspension of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, and the rationale behind the pause in enforcement.

“We temporarily suspended the enforcement of the Act, pending the outcome of the hearing of the Motion on Notice,” the IGP said.

On his part, Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the visit provided an opportunity for “robust deliberations on issues of mutual concern,” including ways to strengthen collaboration between the police and the Bar in upholding the rule of law and promoting public confidence.

According to him, while there is no court order preventing enforcement, the suspension was a precautionary measure.

“The Nigeria Police Force, out of consideration for the interest of Nigerians and regard for the Nigerian Bar Association, temporarily suspended the enforcement of the Act, pending the outcome of the hearing scheduled for 16th October 2025,” Hundeyin said.

IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to enforcing all existing laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for citizens’ rights, while maintaining effective collaboration with key stakeholders in the justice system.

The protest is coming at the expiration of a two-week ultimatum the two unions gave to the federal government to address their demands, which are mainly welfare matters.

The protesting university workers are demanding, among other things, the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government, immediate payment of 25 and 35 per cent salary increment, and the immediate payment of all withheld salaries

The demonstrators carried placards with different inscriptions.
