The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has warned the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Chairman, Christopher Maikalangu against naming of streets across Abuja.

Wike said streets should be named after Nigerians and people who have contributed to the development of the country.

The minister issued the warning during the flag-off of the provision of Engineering infrastructure to outstanding layouts within Guzape A09 Lots I & II district and AIT Neighborhood in Asokoro A04 District on Wednesday.

He said he will not allow the Chairman name roads and streets constructed under his administration.

Wike said: “But anytime you wake up, it’s your own morning. Now that a new government has come, a new government is established to change the narrative, we have no choice but to continue to support that government. So at the end of the day, we will benefit from the dividends of democracy.

“Listen, let me say it now. We cannot be doing roads, putting infrastructure. You wake up in the morning and name streets.

“Before I wake up, you name the streets of the roads we are doing. Put your streets where you do roads. I mean, it is very, very funny. You wake up, somebody writes to you and begs you for money.

“Then you come. Before you know it, it’s Dr. So-so Street. Professor So-so Street. Bishop So-so Street. Madam So-so Street. In a road where I’m suffering, looking for money to provide infrastructure.

” We have to name streets after those who have contributed to the development of the area.”

The Minister challenged the Chairman to return any money he collected to rename any street or roads.

“You don’t just wake up because somebody has two billion naira. He pays to you. Then you come and have a name of a street. That’s not possible. That is not possible. You can go and name them in the satellite town.

“If you want to name it, there are people who have paid you money. Make sure you do the roads too. Provide infrastructure. And then name the street after them.”

The Lagos State Government has released a traffic advisory to inform residents and motorists of planned repair works on the stretch between the Adeniji Adele Interchange Junction and CMS.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He noted that the repair works are scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 12, and will run for six weeks, ending on Sunday, November 23.

According to Osiyemi, the rehabilitation will take place daily between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

To reduce congestion, only one lane will be closed at a time, while the remaining lanes will remain accessible to road users throughout the duration of the works.

He explained that traffic management officers would be stationed at strategic points around the affected route to ensure smooth vehicular movement and minimize disruptions during the period.

Osiyemi appealed to motorists to obey traffic personnel and follow directional signs to ease the flow of traffic, urging patience and cooperation from the public.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Wednesday, disclosed how he helped Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote to make it in business.

Obasanjo disclosed that after creating an enabling environment to ensure that Dangote built his cement factory in Nigeria, he took him to Tanzania, Senegal, and other African countries.

Speaking at the Bauchi State economic and investment summit, Obasanjo stressed the need for public, private sector partnership.

He said: “So Aliko then planned to produce 5 million tons of cement a year. Since we started producing cement in 1956 up to 2003, we’ve never produced 5 million tons.

“So when Aliko made that projection, the people in the ministry said he was telling a lie. He wants to be making it up. I said alright, let’s see how his lie will work.

“So I put two people on Aliko’s construction site and they are reporting to me every day. The day Aliko the contractor did not work, they will phone and tell me. And I will immediately phone Aliko.

“So one day Aliko came to me and said, Mr. President, I’m getting worried about you. I said what have I done? He said you know about this cement project more than myself. And it is not a government project. I’m getting worried about you. I said my brother Aliko, this is a Nigerian project. So anything Nigerian is a government project.

“Not only did Aliko succeed in the first 5 million, he succeeded in the second 5 million. He succeeded in the third 5 million. I started taking him out to other countries in Africa.

“I took him to Tanzania. I took him to Senegal. That’s how Aliko made it. Partnership between the private and the public. Partnership between leadership at every level.”

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, said he suspended the signing of Certificates of Occupancy to property owners because of the alleged possession of about 14,000 hectares of land by a 17-year-old.

DAILY POST reports that the Governor said this during an audience with members of the Shift Najia Initiative, a Non-governmental organisation in Benin City.

Okpebholo said the investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the source of livelihood of the possessor of the land to be able to acquire such a large expanse of land.

He added that the signing of the certificates would commence after the investigation, assuring that the C-of-Os have already been printed.

The governor, who decried the payment of N8 billion to consultants for software by the immediate past government of Governor Godwin Obaseki, added that his administration terminated the contract because it was wasteful of the state’s resources.

He said, the state has developed its own software and is being managed by government staff who are trained for it, as opposed to the consultants.

Okpebholo also decried the alleged encroachment on the Edo State Specialist Hospital land by the management of the Museum of West African Art, MOWAA, noting that by the encroachment, 20 per cent of the land is now left for the state government, while 80 per cent is for the MOWAA.

According to him, the Edo Specialist Hospital land has been encroached upon by the management of the Museum of West African Art, MOWAA, despite the demarcation.

“That land and the hospital belonged to the state government. MOWAA is a private establishment, and it can’t take 80 per cent of the land and leave 20 per cent for the hospital.

“In that hospital, we don’t have a mortuary facility. There is also no emergency ward. Whenever you come there you see patients and relatives sitting outside. We need to make it a real hospital for patients to have good medical attention”, he said.

Okpebholo reeled out his administration achievements in less than one year in office, including the renovation and rehabilitation of public schools, road infrastructures, both state and federal, agriculture, employment of teachers, and civil servants, among others.

He also disclosed that the construction of a second flyover bridge in the state at Adesuwa junction along Sapele road would soon begin after the payment of compensation to the affected property owners.

Earlier, Ikhenbor Felix Igbinevbo, the initiator of Shift Naija Initiative, said ”Shift Naija Initiative is far more than a typical advocacy group; it is a movement aimed at reigniting the spirit of patriotism, enhancing public communication, and realigning our collective focus on governance and development.

“Recognising the crucial role of leadership in this process, the Shift Naija Initiative has positioned itself as a key player in forging a lasting alliance between the media and the government.

“The core objectives of this initiative include transforming national attitude from mere criticism to constructive contributions, from despair to unwavering determination, and from division to collective progress”, he stated.

He, however, called on all patriotic citizens, particularly the youths and community leaders, to unite in the civic responsibility of documenting progress, demanding accountability, and celebrating real results.

In his remarks, the chairman of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Festus Alenkhe, commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for all his developmental strides.

Alenkhe, assured the governor of adequate publicity of his administration’s activities by the members of the union.

He also commended the initiator of the Shift Naija Initiative, Comrade Felix Igbinevbo for deeming it wise to partner with the union.

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Osun State Chapter, has expressed readiness to collaborate with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to strengthen the protection of women and children against sexual and gender-based violence, SGBV, in the state.

Speaking during an advocacy visit to the Osun State Commandant of NSCDC, Emmanuel Igbalawole Sotiyo, in Osogbo on Wednesday, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Abisola Ariwodola, described the partnership as a significant step toward promoting peace, security, and gender equality in Osun.

Ariwodola, commended the NSCDC for its efforts in safeguarding lives and property, and particularly for its initiatives addressing gender-based violence.

She applauded the NSCDC’s establishment of a Special Female Squad, which she described as a game-changer in providing a safe platform for women and girls to report abuse and receive necessary support.

According to her, “Your Special Female Squad has provided women and girls with a voice and a sense of security. It has encouraged victims to come forward and has helped to strengthen trust between the people and the NSCDC.”

The NAWOJ chairperson also praised the Corps for training Gender Desk Officers and Persons with Disabilities Desk Officers to handle cases of SGBV effectively, noting that such capacity-building efforts have improved response to violence and protection services.

“We also commend your community engagement programmes, which have raised awareness about gender-based violence and promoted gender equality. These efforts have made the public see the NSCDC as approachable and reliable,” Ariwodola said.

She added that the collaboration between NAWOJ and the NSCDC would focus on enhancing security reporting, promoting gender sensitive security strategies, and building capacity among women journalists and security personnel.

“By working together, we can develop effective strategies to ensure that survivors receive justice, empower women and girls to participate in peace and security decision-making, and strengthen community engagement,” she stated.

In his response, the Osun NSCDC Commandant, Emmanuel Igbalawole Sotiyo, appreciated NAWOJ for the courtesy visit, describing journalists as essential partners in nation building and societal development.

“No outfit can stand on its own without the support of journalists. I appreciate NAWOJ for recognising what we are doing at the NSCDC. Our mandate is clear, to protect critical national assets and ensure the safety of lives and property, especially women and children,” he said.

The Commandant assured that the Corps would continue to intensify efforts in combating crime and preventing acts of illegality, noting that justice and fairness were key to achieving a better society.

“Our society will only improve when we all champion the cause of justice. Journalists have a vital role in this. Whatever journalists bring to the public’s attention cannot be ignored,” he said.

Sotiyo observed that gender insensitivity remained prevalent in society and called for more enlightenment to reorient people on the importance of respecting women and protecting the female gender.

“Our people must understand that women are the bedrock of the society. Maltreating them will only hinder progress. We are standing firm with NAWOJ to promote the message that women must be respected and protected,” he affirmed.

The Commandant also called on all stakeholders to join forces in addressing challenges faced by women and children, especially during communal conflicts, while urging NAWOJ to partner closely with the NSCDC in its sensitisation and peace-building efforts.

“Women and children suffer most during communal clashes. We need NAWOJ to support us in enlightening the people. Together, we can make our society safer,” Sotiyo concluded.
