Mob Attack: Kwara Vows to Bring Perpetrators to Book

The Kwara State government has said that efforts are in top gear with law enforcement agencies to bring the killers of a woman, Khadijah, who was mistaken for a kidnapper in the state, to book.

THISDAY reports that a mob had on Thursday, at Ipata Market area of Ilorin, the state capital, attacked a woman later identified by the police as a vagabond to stupor, following the suspicion that she was a kidnapper.

The woman later died the same day at the General Hospital, Ilorin from the injuries she sustained during the mob attack.

A statement issued in Ilorin by the state Commissioner for Social Development, Dr Mariam Nnfatima Imam, stated that the state government would bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book so as to serve a deterrent to others.

Imam warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands, advising them to always report suspected individuals to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.

She condemned the jungle justice meted out to the deceased, describing the act as incivility and barbaric.

The commissioner further emphasised the state government’s commitment to protecting the rights of every resident and maintained that the government would not tolerate any act of rascality and illegality capable of threatening the existing peace and harmony across the state.

She, therefore, warned residents to desist from taking laws into their hands, stressing that anyone who engages in such acts will face the full wrath of the law.

 Imam commiserated with the family of the victim of the jungle justice, saying: “The state government is working tirelessly with the law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.”

She also called on residents not to panic, but to support the state government by providing necessary information to security agencies to surmount the security challenges in some parts of the state.

Meanwhile, the family of the victim of the jungle justice, had on Friday demanded justice for her.

The family claimed that the deceased had been battling a severe mental illness for decades.

“She was not a criminal, she was only sick. She battled with brain illness for many years. Sometimes, she would go out to beg for money just to feed herself and her children before returning home.

“We, her family, tried all we could to support her. It is very painful that people mistook her condition for criminality and ended her life in such a cruel manner,” a sister of the victim said.

She condemned the mob action, calling on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, President Bola Tinubu, and relevant security agencies to intervene and ensure that those behind Khadijah’s killing were arrested and prosecuted.

Tell Ogoni Story the Right Way, HYPREP Tells Youths

A call has gone to Ogoni youths to ensure that Ogoni stories are told and heard in the right way.

The call was made by a Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, at the closing ceremony of a training of 100 Ogoni youths in Creative Arts at the Theatre Arts Department, University of Port Harcourt by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).

Zabbey urged the beneficiaries of the training to use the skills acquired to ensure that the Ogoni stories are told and heard in the right way.

The trainees, who had completed a four-month training in script writing, film production and make-up are beneficiaries of the HYPREP sustainable livelihood programme aimed at providing high demand skills to Ogoni youths in the lucrative creative arts and entertainment industry.

Zabbey, while describing the Creative Arts Training as well as other programmes and interventions as HYPREP’s strategic sustained effort to create  alternative sources of livelihood, said: “Targeted capacity building for Ogoni youths and women remains a central strategy in HYPREP’s livelihood restoration and improvement efforts. 

“Our goal is to reach every part of the Ogoni community and ensure that no group or talent pool is left behind. This training is a deliberate step to empower young people who aspire to make their mark in the creative and entertainment industry.”

While commending the trainees for producing four short films within the training period, one of which was premiered at the ceremony, Dirty Festival, the project coordinator stated that the training would serve as a springboard into the industry, enable them earn a living, become entrepreneurs, open new doors opportunities for themselves and communities. 

The three other movies are Open Pain, Bomu and Green War.

He enjoined them to utilise their skills and platforms to promote civic responsibility, peace and environmental sustainability, urging them to ensure that Ogoni is heard in the right way, speak for HYPREP and highlight the progress being made in implementing the recommendations of the UNEP Report.

Other speakers at the event, including the Director, Technical Services of HYPREP, Prof. Damian-Paul Aguiyi; Dr Ovunda Ihunwo, Head of Department, Theatre Arts Department, Uniport; Chief Douglas Experience, Project Manager; Halibiz Consult Ltd and Mrs Josephine Nzidee, Head, Sustainable Livelihood of HYPREP, all applauded HYPREP for the training and charged the trainees to maximise the opportunity.

Trainees were later presented Certificate of Participation.

With the wrapping up of the Creative Arts training of the 100, HYPREP has trained 230 Ogoni youths in high demand skill sets including Seafaring (100) and Aviation (30). 

The project will, this year, commence training in other skill areas including Mechatronic, Aviation, Full-Stack Development, Commercial Diving, Underwater Welding and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).  Still in the offing is the training for Ogoni Persons Living with Disabilities in five skill sets — Fish farming, Basic Computer Skills, Photography, Fashion and Design and Shoemaking — in line with their Needs Assessment and HYPREP’s policy of inclusivity.

Award Meant To Celebrate Worthy Sons, Daughters Of Itsekiri Ethnic Nationality, Says Warri Monarch

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse lll, has said the Royal  Order of Iwere Award (ROI) is not just conferred on worthy sons and daughters of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality, who have not only contributed meaningfully to the growth and development of humanity, but persons with integrity.

The Warri monarch stated this Sunday during the conferment of the prestigious title on seven illustrious sons and daughters of the kingdom at Aghofen, Olu’s palace, Warri. 

The awardees were Papa Ayodele J. Oritsejafor, Dr Ebi Omatsola, Mr Oti Ikomi, Dr (Mrs) Helen Bayo-Ekwueme, Mrs Eva Omaghomi, Mrs Tara Fela-Durotoye and Hon. Godwin T. Ebosa.

Addressing the gathering of his subjects, awardees and friends of Itsekiri nation, the revered monarch said the awardees were worthy to be celebrated not because of their money even when money is good, but  integrity. 

According to him, people are celebrated not because of the state or circumstance of their birth but the talent which they have in them.  

“This is not about celebrating people simply because they have money or they have achieved the same plans of outward success. We are neither here to judge nor condemn how anyone conducts their personal business. But we are here to amplify and celebrate integrity,” he said.

The royal father stated that in today’s society, people have been elevated through celebration into power and governance but common people have been looked down upon even with their integrity. 

He noted that instead of many Itsekiri sons and daughters, with all their integrity and all  they have achieved to come home, they have withdrawn into their shell and gone  elsewhere since they were not being celebrated, hence the Kingdom saw it as a  point of duty to celebrate their own.

“Being the proud people that we have been, there have been many who have resentment and ill feelings, as they have not felt appreciated or celebrated by their own people, for all that they have achieved. People happily go to where they are celebrated and honoured,” he added.

The monarch therefore admonished all sons and daughters of the kingdom to be glad whenever they are invited home to be celebrated as one of the ways for them to contribute their quota to Iwere and the people.

According to the king, part of what the award for the recipients was set to achieve was the celebration of cultural environment, since culture was not just the determinant of identity but the destiny of a people. 

He stated that: “Part of what we set to achieve with these awards are cultural environment and values such as education: formal or informal, hard work, industry, value creation and solutions to society’s problems.”

He said the recipients of the Royal Iwere Order Award would automatically become members of the royal Iwere society with the mandate to screen the nominees and future recipients of the awards. 

He said the people’s diverse knowledge, network and capacity would add value to the royal Iwere society, which would go a long way to project the society from a local one to that international level.

While congratulating the awardees for the achievement, the royal father charged them to continue with their virtues which have  recognised them out for the award.

Responding, all the awardees expressed gratitude to the monarch for the honour done them just as they promised to be worthy ambassadors of the kingdom.
