At least, six people have lost their lives and three others are missing after a boat accident in Garin Faji, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to reports, the victims were among dozens of people who boarded boats while trying to escape an attack by armed bandits. However, one of the boats capsized, leading to multiple casualties.

The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the incident. A senior official who spoke to journalists under condition of anonymity said 19 people were rescued from the water, while search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate the missing passengers.

The development comes just six days after a similar mishap in neighbouring Goronyo Local Government Area, where four people died while trying to escape a bandit raid.

Human rights activist, Mahdi Shehu has accused Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, of showing open bias in her charity interventions under the Renewed Hope project, saying her actions appear to favor Christian communities over Muslims.

In a post shared on X on Sunday, Shehu described Mrs. Tinubu as a seemingly biased mother whose approach to relief distribution risks deepening divisions rather than uniting Nigerians.

“Her body language, her numerous charitable spendings, and her visits to disaster locations all show that the Renewed Hope project is tilted too heavily towards her Christian community,” he wrote.

“These open biases do not raise hopes but rather dash hopes, create more divisions and hate which ultimately destroys unity, harmony and cohesion.”

Shehu claimed that disaster victims in states like Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, and Kogi, where Christians form a majority, have received swift visits and generous donations running into billions of naira from the First Lady.

By contrast, he argued, Muslim-majority states such as Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Niger have either been overlooked or given what he called peanuts in cash and drops of reliefs.

According to him, “Disaster victims, mostly Muslims, are watching a mother visibly tilted towards her chosen and preferred children.”

“These open biases do not raise hopes but rather dash them, creating more divisions, hatred, and ultimately destroying unity and harmony.”

Backing his criticism with biblical references, Shehu cited Psalms 25:8 and Isaiah 32:1-5 to call for fairness and justice in leadership.

Shehu concluded by urging the First Lady to reflect deeply on her role.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara state and commanders of two security agencies in the state, on Saturday stormed troubled Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Babanla community has been trending recently over violent attacks by armed bandits which forced some of the people in Ganmu Ahileri community near Babanla to desert their ancestral homes.

Governor Abdulrazaq reassured the community that the government stands in solidarity with them as multi agency security deployments are made to strengthen public safety and deter criminals from taking advantage of the people.

He asserted that “no resources will be spared to protect the people.”

The visit is on the heels of strategic security measures put in place in the area following recent breaches by criminals in the community and its environs.

Governor Abdulrazaq was accompanied by security commanders, including Brigade Commander Brigadier General Barkins, Police Commissioner Adekimi Ojo, Ifelodun Local Government Chairman, Femi Yusuf, and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security, Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu.

Led by the the Oba of Babanla, Alhaji Aliu Adegboyega Alabi Yusuf and his chiefs, hundreds of community members welcomed the governor and his entourage in Babanla.

The monarch commended the governor for standing by the communities involved.

The Coalition for Good Leadership, Accountability, and Rule of Law Initiative has praised the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) for refusing to back the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) wanted declaration of businessman Bashir Abdullahi Haske.

In a statement released on Saturday, the coalition described the EFCC’s move as politically motivated and a clear attempt to use state power against perceived opponents of the ruling government.

“Interpol has shown courage in standing against the victimization of opposition figures in Nigeria. By refusing to support the EFCC’s actions, they have made it clear that they will not be used as a tool for political persecution.”

Haske, who is a son-in-law of opposition leader Atiku Abubakar, was declared wanted by the EFCC on August 21, 2025.

The coalition, however, argued that the agency deliberately sensationalized the case by repeatedly tagging him as Atiku’s in-law in the media, instead of focusing on the facts.

According to the group, Interpol confirmed in a response to a Nigerian newspaper that it had not received any request from the EFCC about Haske and does not support politically motivated cases.

The coalition also accused the EFCC of conducting what it called a media trial aimed at damaging Haske’s reputation.

“If this case truly followed international law, why has the EFCC not contacted Interpol? Their refusal to follow due process raises serious questions,” the statement added.

“The EFCC’s failure to follow standard procedures suggests ulterior motives and reinforces fears of a politically driven agenda,” the coalition said.

“This is a troubling case of sensationalism being placed above proper judicial processes, and it shows how the agency is weaponizing its authority to target political opponents.”

Court records cited by the coalition showed that Haske had honored EFCC’s invitation for questioning in July and even spent two days in detention, during which he collapsed and was rushed to hospital. Despite meeting bail conditions, no charges have yet been filed against him.

Arc. Benedict Aiguobarueghian, convener of the coalition, urged the media and the public to hold institutions accountable.

“The EFCC’s pursuit of this case appears driven by personal and political agendas rather than evidence of wrongdoing. Such actions weaken public trust in our anti-graft agencies and must stop.”

The coalition concluded by calling on the EFCC to act with fairness and respect for due process.
