The Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State, Chief Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar, has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating Vice-President Kashim Shettima on the occasion of his 59th birthday.
Ironbar extolled the vice-president as “a torchbearer of hope, a leader of rare conviction, and a statesman whose life of service continues to inspire trust and faith in the Nigerian project”.
In a goodwill message issued in Calabar, Ironbar lauded the vice-president as “a patriot of uncommon depth and clarity, whose footprints of courage, resilience, and foresight are deeply etched in the story of modern Nigeria”.
He observed that Shettima’s leadership journey, spanning his years as governor of Borno State to his current service as vice-president, reflects an extraordinary commitment to duty under the most demanding of circumstances.
“On behalf of my family,” the Chief of Staff declared, “I warmly felicitate you on this remarkable milestone. I celebrate not merely the gift of life, but the enduring virtues of vision, humility and integrity which you embody and which remain a source of reassurance for our country.”
Ironbar noted that Shettima has, over the years, distinguished himself as a man of ideas and action, combining intellect with pragmatism.
He recalled how the vice-president, as governor, confronted formidable security and developmental challenges with courage, laying a foundation of resilience for his people and becoming a symbol of hope for the entire nation.
“His ability to turn adversity into opportunity has marked him out as one of Nigeria’s most resourceful leaders,” he added.
Reflecting on his national role, the chief of staff emphasized that the vice-president’s collaboration with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda has ignited fresh confidence among Nigerians.
“By standing firmly with the president in championing reforms, restructuring the economy, and rekindling public trust, Senator Shettima has proven himself a true partner in leadership and a steady anchor for the nation,” he stated.
He further described the vice-president as “a voice of moderation in times of strain, a source of calm in the midst of turbulence, and a guardian of democratic ideals whose counsel enriches governance with wisdom and foresight”.

The chief of staff affirmed that the people of Cross River State take pride in joining the rest of the nation to celebrate the vice-president, noting that his example of “service above self, duty above comfort, and courage in the face of challenge” remains a moral compass for present and future generations.

The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT), Nigeria Chapter, has expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity in Zamfara State and across the country, calling for urgent moral, spiritual, and collective action to restore peace.
The group’s reaction follows Governor Dauda Lawal’s lamentation that despite intelligence on the movements of bandits, effective action often stalls due to the need for clearance from higher authorities. IHRC-RFT described the situation as both a security and humanitarian crisis that demands immediate response.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday and signed by its Country Director, Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the commission called on various sectors of society to play their role in confronting insecurity.
It urged faith leaders—both Christian and Muslim clergy—to remind leaders and followers of accountability before God, emphasizing the sanctity of human life. Traditional rulers were asked to stand firm as custodians of conscience and resist any form of collaboration with criminals.
Political leaders, the statement stressed, must remember that “power is a trust and a test from God” and must be exercised with sincerity, responsibility, and fear of divine judgment.
Addressing those involved in banditry and terrorism, the group appealed for reflection and repentance, reminding them that “no wealth, gun, or position can save them from the inevitable reality of death and the hereafter.”
IHRC-RFT also urged the general public to remain steadfast in prayers, supplications, and good deeds, noting that security is a collective responsibility.
The group further appealed to the Federal Government to adopt decisive, people-centered measures that prioritize protection of lives and property, warning that injustice and negligence only emboldens criminal elements.
“The IHRC-RFT Nigeria Chapter stands in solidarity with all victims of violence and calls for a national awakening — a return to God, to conscience, and to humanity,” the statement concluded.

The Edo State Local Government Commission has ordered the immediate suspension of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, election following a reported bloody clash, gunshots, and violence.
DAILY POST reports that the NULGE election, which was held simultaneously across the 18 local government areas on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, was disrupted by armed thugs in some councils.
It was gathered that violence broke out in Uhunmwode and Igueben local government areas, allegedly leading to the shooting and injuring of some staff.
Delegates who refused to cast their votes for certain candidates in Uhunmwode and Igueben were reportedly beaten and chased away from the election venues amid gunfire.
Some delegates in one of the affected councils attributed the disruption to alleged forceful imposition.
One of the delegates, who simply identified herself as Esohe, alleged that a particular council chairman wrote the names of candidates he wanted to emerge as executives of NULGE in the council.
Trouble was said to have started when the anointed chairman’s candidate discovered that his opponent was in a clear lead.
Suspected political thugs then reportedly invaded the venue and began shooting sporadically. The delegates were chased away and the ballot boxes destroyed.
Following the development, the Edo State Local Government Commission ordered the immediate suspension of the elections.
In a letter addressed to the President of NULGE in the state, the commission attributed the suspension to the increasing number of petitions, disputes, and growing unrest among staff of the Unified Local Government Service.
The letter, signed by the secretary of the commission, Odigie George, noted that the most worrisome aspect was the reported security breach at Uhunmwode Local Government Council.
According to him, the incident allegedly resulted in shootings and injuries sustained by staff, as captured in viral video clips presently circulating.
“In the light of the foregoing and in order to safeguard the peace, security, and industrial relations of staff, the Commission hereby announces the immediate postponement of all ongoing NULGE branch elections pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it has received a total of 171 letters of intent for the registration of new political parties.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, in a statement Thursday, said it has received 19 more letters of intent from 19 associations seeking registration as political parties as of Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
He noted that the details of the latest update are uploaded on its website and other official platforms for public information.
Olumekun added: “Since our last update on the number of associations seeking registration as political parties, 19 more letters of intent have been received, bringing the total so far to 171 as at yesterday, 3rd September 2025. Details of the latest update are uploaded to our website and other official platforms for public information.
“As earlier announced by the commission, a shortlist of the pre-qualified associations is being finalised for the next stage of application for registration. The committee reviewing the letters of intent has prepared its recommendations for final consideration by the commission.
“We wish to appeal to all the associations that submitted letters of intent to remain patient as we finalise the process. We also urge them to avoid frequent changes to their logos, acronyms and addresses or one association submitting multiple requests.
“Worse, some associations have changed their interim leaderships, following defections to other associations or even existing political parties, thereby delaying the process.
“We wish to reassure the associations that the commission will treat all applications fairly while urging them to assist the process by remaining consistent.”
Olumekun stated that the commission would continue to communicate with Nigerians on all its activities.
Meanwhile, the has commission stressed that a total of 2,656,437 registered voters would elect a new governor in Anambra State in November.
According to Olumekun, “In continuation of preparations for the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election, the commission carried out voter registration in the 326 wards across the state from 8th to 20th July 2025. During that period, 168,187 citizens registered as new voters.
“At the end of the registration exercise, the commission earmarked a period of one week (8th to 20th July 2025) to display the list of new registrants in all the wards for claims and objections by citizens in the spirit of Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
“Furthermore, the commission scrutinised the list using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to detect invalid registrations. At the end of the process, 27,817 records were found to be double or multiple registrations and removed from the list.
“Consequently, the figure for new registrants now stands at 140,370, while valid applications for transfer into the state is 5,983, making a total of 146,353 new voters.
“Prior to the recent voter registration, Anambra State had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the new registrants, the voters roll for the state now stands at 2,802,790.
“The distribution of the new figures by local government area shows that Idemili North with 246,318 (8.79%) has the highest number of voters, followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73%) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71%). On the other hand, Dunokofia and Anambra West have 83,580 (2.98%) and 71,332 (2.55%) registered voters respectively.”
Olumekun said the distribution of new voters by local government area has been uploaded to its website and other official platforms for public information.
It assured Nigerians that new voters in Anambra State, as well as those who applied for transfer or replacement of their lost or damaged Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) that their cards would be ready for collection well ahead of the governorship election holding in the next 63 days on Satruday, 8th November, 2025.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have neutralised 13 terrorists in a failed ambush and improvised explosive device, IED, attack on a military convoy at Kareto in Borno State.
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, said in a statement that the ambush occurred on September 3, 2025 while the troops were escorting humanitarian trucks along the Gubio–Damasak road.
He stated that the troops pursued the terrorists, exploited the area, and recovered eight AK-47 rifles, 10 AK-47 magazines, and a large cache of 7.62mm ammunition.
Other items recovered included a camel bag, several rolls of detonating cord wires used for making IEDs, as well as several primed IEDs.
“Unfortunately, a soldier was slightly wounded in action but stable, 4 MRAP tyres damaged while two of the trucks were engulfed in flames during the encounter,” the statement read.
It added that the troops have sustained deliberate operations in the general area to deny the terrorists freedom of action, while continuing humanitarian operations by providing security for relief materials, which have since been secured and moved to Damasak.

The Ogun State Alternative Medicine Board, OGAMB, has begun its herbal plantation farming on a 17-acre plot of land, comprising a variety of herbal plants and roots for local and international use.
The board’s chairman, Balogun Olaleye, stated this during the third-quarter meeting of the board, held at Oke-mosan, Abeokuta, on Thursday.
Olaleye noted that the board’s complementary role in the health sector could not be overlooked, hence the need to combat global deforestation, habitat destruction from agriculture and logging, and climate change.
He lamented that approximately 15,000 medicinal plants are at risk, especially in Africa and China, where those plants are almost becoming extinct due to over-harvesting.
According to Olaleye, the state Alternative Medicine Board would cultivate and monitor some of these plants to ensure their continued use locally and internationally and, eventually, as a source of income for the state.
He said: “There are about 50,000–80,000 known medicinal plant species worldwide; approximately 15,000 are currently threatened, and around 20 per cent of wild medicinal plant resources have already been depleted. Sustainable harvesting practices, cultivation and improved land management are crucial to mitigate this biodiversity crisis and prevent the loss of these vital natural resources.
“With the Ogun State Alternative Medicine Board’s initiative to cultivate herbal plants, some of these plants will be planted here in Ogun State and monitored to make sure that we retain them for the use of our people at the local and international levels and ultimately serve as a source of revenue for the state.”
Also speaking, the Registrar and Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr Kafayat Lawal, said the current administration’s decision to establish the board had begun to yield tremendous success, as UNICEF commended the board on the coordination of the traditional birth attendants across the state.
She affirmed that in due course, a collaborative training session would take place between UNICEF and OGAMB for traditional birth attendants across the state on more efficient practice and reporting of data in order to reduce child mortality rate in the state.

The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has directed traditional rulers, village heads and community leaders to begin profiling all new residents in their areas as part of efforts to curb killings and kidnappings across the state.
The governor’s Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Comrade Peter Ahemba, revealed this on Thursday in Lafia while addressing journalists on recent security concerns.
Ahemba explained that the directive followed renewed attacks in Keana, Kadarko and other communities, which displaced residents and heightened insecurity.
“Governor Sule has directed security operatives to intensify surveillance, comb all criminal hideouts, and deal decisively with anyone caught,” Ahemba said.
He added that the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, alongside traditional rulers, has been mandated to ensure profiling of new arrivals to weed out criminal elements.
The government also plans to deploy technology in security operations, while warning that anyone shielding or bailing arrested suspects would face sanctions.
Governor Sule further appealed to residents to support security agencies with timely reports of suspicious movements.
On insecurity concerns around the Lafia flyover and underpass, Ahemba revealed that operatives of the Nasarawa Youths Empowerment Agency (NAYEA) had been deployed to safeguard the area.
He also cautioned politicians against premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that such actions contravene electoral laws and could create needless tension.
