Members of the Niger State House of Assembly have passed a bill extending the retirement age of academic staff in state-owned institutions.

Under the new bill, the retirement age for general academic staff has been increased from 65 to 70 years, while professorial cadre staff will now retire at 75 years instead of 70.

The bill was adopted following the presentation of a report by the chairman of the Standing Committee on Education, Hon. Mohammed Sani Idris, representing Tafa constituency.

He explained that the move aligns with national standards, retains experienced academic staff, and improves education quality.

The House also resolved to summon the commissioner and permanent secretary of the Ministry of Works to explain their failure to implement earlier directives on road safety measures.

This follows the presentation of a report by the chairman of the House Standing Committee on Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Abubakar Suleiman Gomna, representing Bosso constituency.

The lawmaker maintained that the move underscores the House’s commitment to citizen safety and infrastructure improvement.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa, has disclosed that there are ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to arrest terrorism financiers.

Musa revealed that the Attorney General of the Federation and the National Security Adviser are working to identify those funding terrorism.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Gen Musa said some of these financiers operate from abroad.

He said: “The process is ongoing for this government. I can say that last week the Attorney General has gone to check because it has to do with a lot of legal issues.

“And because it has to do with international connections, some of them have funds coming from outside and we can’t do anything from within.

“The local ones try to employ a few individuals and provide them with motorcycles and those ones are remitting funds daily into some accounts and it’s been tracked.

“Apart from the intelligence setup, the financial leaks are also being followed through and arrests have been made. I can assure you that the Attorney General of the Federation, the NSA are working seriously to ensure that we address those issues.”

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has stated that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in Finland, Simon Ekpa, is currently undergoing prosecution.

Musa made the disclosure on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

According to him, Ekpa’s arrest has contributed to improved security in the South East region.

“He is currently undergoing prosecution. So we’re hopeful,” he said, suggesting Ekpa might be repatriated.

“When we talked about him, people felt we were just making noise, but since he had been arrested, South East is getting better,” he added.

Gen Musa emphasised that the military and security agencies remain committed to pursuing those instigating violence across the country.

“The likes of him, we are going to go after them, wherever they are and whatever it takes we will bring them,” he said.

The Defence Chief also described the recent clampdown on Ansaru terrorists as a “good win” for the country, assuring that efforts are ongoing to neutralise other violent groups.

Speaking on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Musa said the decision was prompted by the failure of the legal system to prosecute such cases effectively.

“It has to do with the legal system, sometimes legal intercepts. You take it to court, it’s knocked out, [for] one reason or the other. Again, this brings us to the legal system. We have to also review our legal [system] because of some of the punishments and prosecutions,” he said.

“Maybe [we should] have special courts that will treat cases as quickly as they are, that is very important. I think we need to review the punishment for offenses also.”

He continued: “I will give you an example in the South-South. We arrest a vessel. How much is it? They give them peanuts and the vessel is back. That’s why we started burning the vessel. Then, again, people started talking about the environment. So you now [are] caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.

“For us, burning those items once they are arrested, we started having peace. But as long as we keep on arresting them and handing them over and they go to the legal system, it becomes a problem. It takes a longer time. It takes a longer time to process.”

He further argued that weak legal outcomes discourage troops from risking their lives to make arrests.

“You go in, risk all your life, make an arrest; for one reason or the other, technical issues, the item is released tomorrow.

“You think that soldier is ready to sacrifice himself to go and make arrests again? It becomes a problem. In the Middle East, terrorism cases are serious cases. If your name gets in there, even your family member, nobody will come.”

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has urged all Nigerians to learn combat skills to protect themselves in the face of danger.

General Musa gave this advice on Thursday when he appeared as a guest on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.

He likened the acquisition of combat skills to driving, swimming, and other essential survival skills.

When asked whether he would advise Nigerians to learn combat skills for self-defence, General Musa said, “That one should be taken as learning driving, learning how to swim. Whether we have war or not, it is a survival instinct.

“In Europe, swimming is compulsory; [so is] Learning and teaching about security because you have to learn what security is.”

According to him, the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, should train Nigerian graduates in unarmed combat skills for day-to-day survival against dark-hearted men.

The defence chief further explained that security is the responsibility of all Nigerians, even as he urged citizens to remain situationally aware of their surroundings to identify strange and suspicious individuals.
