Nollywood drug busts as well as the arrest of a prominent filmmaker are a few of the major wins for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency as they continue their impressive track record against drug trafficking.

Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy, provided these comments on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at the agency headquarters in Abuja.

According to the briefing, operatives from NDLEA arrested Emeka Emmanuel Mbadiwe — a US trained Nollywood filmmaker — in his hotel room in Lekki, Lagos during a drug bust operation. This arrest came after Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James was detained at the Ajao Estate warehouse. He was in the midst of receiving a shipment of over 17 kilograms of cannabis that had been imported from the US.

On January 1 of 2025, the agency arrested 61-year-old Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye — a Mushin based drug kingpin, in her mansion in Okota.

The NDLEA had earlier siezed a truck that had over 1540 kilograms of cannabis and believed it had a link to Iya Ruka, who had over a million $ worth of cannabis in her possession.

In the words of Babafemi, Iya Ruka allegedly conducted a vast illicit drug empire at the same time that she was skillfully marketing herself as a prosperous entrepreneur involved in fabric and shoe sales.

Less than two years in office, Gov Bassey Otu of Cross River State has removed two traditional rulers from office.

Yesterday, he suspended the village head of Esuk Utan, His Highness Okkn Archinong Eke with entire Esuk Utan village council effective 3rd January 2025.

No reasons were given for the action in a letter signed by his Chief press Secretary, Gill Nsa.

However, the governor has mandated the Calabar Municipal Traditional Rulers Council, CMTRC, to investigate the allegations labeled against the village head and the council.

The CMTRC has been directed to submit its findings not later than one week.

But in the meantime, the governor has directed the Obutong clan council to set up a 5-man committee to manage affairs of the Esul Utan community pending outcome of the investigation.

It would be recalled that in April 2024, the governor had ordered the removal of the head of Akansoko in Akpabuyo LGA, His Royal Highness Etinyin Archibong Ita who had acted when the former Paramount Ruler passed on.

The monarch had protested, saying the governor was wrong to select a Paramount Ruler for the area.

He insisted that the clan heads were supposed to meet and select one from among themselves to assume the position.

He said this did not happen and the selection of acting Paramount Ruler by the governor was devoid of equity.

Otu in a statement signed by NSA had rather appointed the Clan Head of Esuk Mba Clan in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, HRH Etinyin Francis Effiom Edem Efa.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kano branch, has raised concerns over the rising number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) seeking refuge in the state.

Many of the displaced are forced to live in markets, motor parks, and un some cases, schools, as they struggle to find shelter.

Alhaji Musa D. Abdullahi, branch Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross in Kano, highlighted the dire situation in an interview with DAILY POST.

He emphasized the urgent need for immediate intervention to provide essential resources such as shelter and clothing.

“These IDPs had everything, but they had to leave their homes with nothing because of the crises in their states,” Abdullahi stated.

The influx of displaced persons is reportedly linked to escalating insecurity in neighboring states, including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and other parts of northern Nigeria.

These regions have been grappling with a surge in kidnapping, banditry, and insurgency, forcing thousands to flee their homes.

Abdullahi called on governments at all levels to recognize the gravity of the situation and take swift action to address the growing humanitarian crisis.

The Red Cross’s appeal underscores the need for coordinated efforts by government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to alleviate the suffering of those affected and provide sustainable solutions to the displacement crisis.
