As the crisis over the leadership of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, persists, the Acting chairman of the union, Bernard Joman Egwakhide, said he remains the incumbent leader of the council.
DAILY POST reports that two factions are now laying claim to the executive of the union in the state.
The factions are Prof Monday Igbafen-led executive backed by the president of the union, Joe Ajaero and that of Bernard Joman Egwakhide, allegedly backed by the Edo State House of Assembly and the state government.
The Monday Igbafen-led caretaker committee was sworn in on Thursday, 28, 2025 by officials from the national headquarters of the union led by Oluwole Adeleye Sunday, in an undisclosed location in Benin City, following the sealing of the secretariat by security agencies.
The inauguration of the caretaker committee followed the alleged dissolution of the Comrade Bernard Egwakhide-led executive by the national leadership of the union.
Speaking with newsmen at the union secretariat, Bernard Egwakhide insisted that he remains the authentic acting state chairman of NLC.
Egwakhide, opined that the representatives of the National leadership of the union failed to show up for the inauguration of the authentic caretaker committee scheduled to hold at the State NLC secretariat located at Temboga road in Benin City.
He said the executives and members of the union waited all day for the national officials for their inauguration but they were, however, disappointed that they never showed up.
“From the directive and the letter sent by the National secretary, it stated that they are coming to inaugurate a committee. We have been here since morning. Other workers have been here too.
“We have not seen anybody who comes into this place to inaugurate any committee. So, we feel that nothing has happened again.
”In all, Comrade Bernard Egwuakhide remain the authentic chairman of Edo NLC. I emerged as the caretaker committee chairman of the Edo NLC after 43 affiliate unions gave me their nods”, he said.
He stated that he emerged as the caretaker committee chairman following the alleged removal of the erstwhile chairman, Odion Olaye, from office.
He, however, accused the Joe Ajaero-led National leadership of the union of causing trouble in the Edo State chapter after he attempted to impose other caretaker committee members on the workers.
Egwuakhide alleged that Joe Ajaero also flouted the Edo State House Assembly resolution on the state’s NLC leadership for peace to reign.

FG Denies Signing Agreement With ASUU, Describes Document As Draft
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has said that there is no binding agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Alausa disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday when fielding questions from journalists on the ongoing ASUU protest across the country.
The minister clarified that contrary to the impression by some Nigerians, the government had never signed any binding agreement with ASUU, describing the document as a draft.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to resolve issues raised by the union, saying President Bola Tinubu had mandated the ministry to find a lasting solution that would keep Nigerian children in school.
He emphasised that the administration was not interested in “bogus or unsustainable agreements” but in reaching an accord that was implementable and constitutionally backed.
He stressed that ASUU’s recent protests would not degenerate into strike, as the government had engaged the union “continuously and meticulously”.
“We are committed to solving this problem once and for all. What has lingered since the 2009 and 2021 agreements will now be addressed in a sustainable way.
“The president has made it clear that every promise made to ASUU and Nigerians will be fulfilled truthfully and honestly,”he said .
Alausa also said that the ministry held a high-level meeting with stakeholders Thursday (today) to find a lasting solution to the lingering problems.
He said the meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Education, Minister of Labour and Productivity, and Solicitor-General of the Federation.
Others in attendance were Permanent Secretaries in the ministries of Education, Labour and Justice; as well as heads of key agencies, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), Salaries and Wages Commission, and the Budget Office.
He added that the meeting reviewed ASUU proposals line by line which would be fine-tuned by the committee’s technical team.
According to him, the team would submit a “clean report” that would be forwarded to the Yayale Ahmed-led committee to renegotiate the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement.
“We want an agreement where every component is actionable and feasible.
”Nigerians can be assured that this government will keep our schools open and ensure our children remain in classrooms,” he stated.
He added that unlike in the past, the Ministry of Justice would be fully involved in the process to ensure agreements comply with constitutional provisions. (NAN)

The federal government says it never signed any agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made this clarification on Thursday, while speaking with newsmen in Abuja, insisting that the documents being referenced were merely proposals.
Alausa stated that both the 2009 and 2011 documents often cited by ASUU as binding agreements were never signed, but only proposals presented during negotiations.
The minister also maintained that the administration of President Bola Tinubu was, however, committed to resolving lingering issues with the university lecturers’ union.
“The documents ASUU has been referring to as agreements were just proposals that were never signed,” Alausa stated.
He dismissed reports that he scheduled a meeting with ASUU and the Minister of Labour and Employment, describing them as inaccurate.
